Should You Drink Salt Water in Morning?

Overview

A morning beverage of salt water, to which natural salt has been added--not straight sea water--supports digestive health, fewer infections, improved immunity and even diabetes control, according to sources from folklore and current scientific studies. The American Heart Association recommends an overall reduction in dietary sodium, but does acknowledge the importance of salt's role in the human diet.

Empty Salt

A single teaspoon of salt contains 1,200 mg of sodium, almost the AHA's entire recommended daily limit of 1,500 mg. According to the AHA, 75 percent of the average American's salt consumption comes from processed foods, but Shirley's Wellness Cafe points out that the overriding problem is that the salt you eat has been chemically altered to retain only two elements, sodium and chloride, whereas crystal or sea water salts, with 84 total elements, contain potassium, magnesium and calcium, all of which contribute to moderating sodium's impact.

Beneficial Cleansing

Natural or sea salt is used in homeopathic salt drinks. Life Events espouses a seven-morning saltwater cleanse to combat colds, digestive problems, organ impurities and age-related ailments--even high blood pressure. Essentially a detoxifying tool for the intestines, 2 quarts of warm water are mixed with 1 tbsp. of crystal or sea salt and consumed between when you awaken in the morning. Better metabolism, skin and sleep are among the purported benefits.

Salt, Diabetes and High Blood Pressure

The "American Journal of Hypertension" has presented research suggesting that diabetes and high blood pressure, or hypertension, may actually improve over a four-week course of sodium supplementation of 8 g, or almost 4 tsp., daily. Four daily doses of 2 g each, or almost 1 tsp. each time, would require that at least one dose be a morning dose. After the four weeks of sodium loading, glucose tolerance tests revealed that glycemic responses were 8 percent lower in both hypertensives and type 2 diabetics. Interestingly, sodium chloride was used, not crystal or sea salt, so even table salt may be a potent health aid.

Sports and Hyponatremia

A saltwater drink prior to a morning sports competition could improve athletic performance. The American College of Sports Medicine says hyponatremia, a condition whereby too much water dilutes the body's vital sodium stores, can be as debilitating as dehydration. Without enough sodium, athletes can suffer muscle cramping, muscle failure, mental disorientation and fainting. Many sports drinks now incorporate sodium, but not a lot. Gatorade contains only 110 mg per 8 oz. Therefore, on hot days, heavy sweating can still cause dangerous sodium loss.

The Well-Salted Athlete

Consuming at least 8 oz. of water with 150 mg salt, or 1/8 tsp., before morning competitions would assure the athlete of optimal sodium stores. For morning marathoners, a salty beverage upon rising could help prevent hyponatremia during the race, when fluid retention becomes critical. Race organizers rightly caution against dehydration, but salty fluids are more likely to help prevent dehydration than water alone.
