The Buddhist World joins a series of books on the world’s great religions and cultures, offering a lively and up-to-date survey of Buddhist Studies for students and scholars alike. It explores regional varieties of Buddhism and core topics including buddha-nature, ritual, and pilgrimage. In addition to historical and geo-political views of Buddhism, the volume features thematic chapters on philosophical concepts such as ethics, as well as social constructs and categories such as community and family. The book also addresses lived Buddhism in its many forms, examining the ways in which modernity is reshaping traditional structures, ancient doctrines, and cosmological beliefs. John Powers is Professor of Asian Studies in the School of Culture, History and Language, College of Asia and the Pacific, Australian National University, and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities. He is the author of fourteen books and more than seventy articles and book chapters. His publications include A Bull of a Man: Images of Masculinity, Sex, and the Body in Indian Buddhism (2015) and Historical Dictionary of Tibet (with David Templeman, 2012)

Cuốn sách này được chia làm bốn phần viết về thế giới Phật Giáo từ cổ chí kim, từ Đông Sang Tây. Tác giả John Powers đã dày công sưu tầm những bài viết của nhiều tác giả (chính John Powers cũng viết bốn bài).
Phần I, Thế Giới Phật Giáo về Lịch Sử và Địa Chính Trị gồm 7 bài viết của các tác giả khác nhau.
Phần II, Thế Giới Phật Giáo về Triết Học-Tôn Giáo, gồm 10 bài biết của các tác giả khác nhau.  
Phần III, Thế Giới Xã Hội Phật Giáo, gồm 11 bài viết.
Phần IV Tiểu Sử, gồm 13 bài viết về 14 nhân vật Phật Giáo có ảnh hưởng lớn nhất, đặc trưng nhất, và đại diện cho Phật Giáo lên Lịch Sử tôn giáo này từ xưa đến nay. Lý do 13 bài nhưng có 14 nhân vật Phật Giáo là vì bài thứ 4 viết về hai nhân vật. Đây là danh sách:

5. Wonhyo (Nguyên Hiểu – đại sư Triều Tiên)
6. Dogen (Thiền sư Đạo Nguyên – sơ tổ Tông Tào Động – Nhật Bản)
7. Milarepa ( ngài Milarepa - Đại hành giả Tây Tạng )

Qua danh sách, độc giả ghi nhận có năm vị người Ấn, ba vị người Tây Tạng, hai vị người Nhật Bản. Các nước Trung Hoa, Triều Tiên, Thái Lan và Việt Nam thì mỗi quốc gia có một vị đại sư được chọn vào danh sách này. Hiện thời chỉ có Đức Đạt Lai Lạt Ma còn sống, các vị khác đều đã nhập diệt.
