Preface

The doctrine or wisdom of Buddha regarded as the door (method) to enlightenment. The teaching of the Buddha. The meaning is that the dharma is something like a gate, because through it sentient beings attain the enlightenment. As the living have 84,000 delusions, so the Buddha provides 84,000 methods of dealing with them. Knowing that the spiritual level of sentient beings is totally different from one another, the Buddha had allowed his disciples to choose any suitable Dharma they like to practice. A person can practice one or many dharmas, depending on his physical conditions, his free time, since all the dharmas are closely related. Practicing Buddhist Dharma requires continuity, regularity, faith, purpose and determination. Laziness and hurriedness are signs of failure. There is only one path leading to Enlightenment, but, since people differ greatly in terms of health, material conditions, intelligence, character and faith, the Buddha taught more than one path leading to different stages of attainment such as stage of Hearers, that of Pratyeka-buddhas, that of Bodhisattvas, that of  laymen, and that of monks and nuns. All of these ways are ways to the Buddhahood. Nobody can reach final attainment without following a path, and no enlightenment can be reached without studying, understanding and practicing. As mentioned above, Buddhism has provided beings with thousands of  methods in Buddhist cultivation. Buddhists presently cultivate in three main methods of Zen, the Pure Land, and the Mantrayana. It is to say meditation, Buddha Recitation and chanting of Mantras. Generally speaking, a majority of Buddhist practitioners usually practice the first two methods of Zen and Buddha recitation. While Buddhists in most Tibetan areas practice chanting of Dharanis.

According to Buddhism, Zen and Pure Land have always been non-dual. If we thoroughly understand one, we thoroughly understand both. If we fail to understand one, we will fail on both, Zen or Pure Land focus on “Mind.” There are no dharmas outside the mind. Zen practitioners should always remember that no matter what Dharma-door you are practicing, Zen or the Pure Land, you should not enjoy the human or deva bless, but try hard to enter enlightenment and to become a Buddha. The intermediate goal of Buddha Recitation is to achieve one-pointed mind; from one-pointed mind gradually one can see one’s own nature or to achieve the ultimate goal of Buddhahood. Enlightening Beings remember Buddhas because they see infinite Buddhas in a single pore opening the minds of all sentient beings. Similarly, Zen is the method of meditation and contemplation, the method of keeping the mind calm and quiet, the method of self-realization to discover that the Buddha-nature is nothing other than the true nature. However, the contemplative traditions of Buddhism are not simple like that. Although Sakyamuni Buddha expounded countless methods throughout His teaching career, they are all based upon the various stages of Bodhisattvahood mentioned above. Thus, the Zen tradition points directly to the Self-Mind, seeing one's Nature and achieving Buddhahood. This is a perfect, direct shortcut. However, we are speaking here from the viewpoint of the inherent Dharma Body, that is, principle or noumenon, bypassing phenomenal cultivation and attainment grounded in the law of Cause and Effect. If we were to consider the different levels of cultivation and achievement, there would be no difference between Zen and the Sutra Studies method. Other methods depend on the capacities of the practitioner. If they lead only to limited attainment such as Arhatship, those of high capacities need not practice them. If they lead to great attainment, those of limited capacities cannot cultivate them. Only the Pure Land method embraces practitioners of all three capacities, high, moderate, and low. Supremely lofty beings, such as the Bodhisattvas Avalokitesvara, Mahasthamaprapta, Manjusri and Samantabhadra, cannot transcend it, while those of low capacities, who have committed the Five Grave Offenses or the Ten Evil Deeds and have sown the seeds of the Never-Ending Hell, can still participate in it. If Sakyamuni Buddha had not taught this method, the majority of sentient beings in the Dharma-Ending Age could not hope to escape the cycle of Birth and Death. In this Saha World, it may be possible to escape Birth and Death through meditation if all delusive karma is eliminated. If, however, all delusive karma is not eliminated, the Zen follower not only cannot rely on his own strength or self-power to achieve liberation, he cannot rely on the Buddha's power or other-power to escape Birth and Death either for his lack of Faith and Vows. Unable to rely either on self-power or on other-power, how can he escape the sufferings of this world? In 'Letters From Patriarch Yin-Kuang,' Great Master Yin-Kuang said: “Pure Land practitioners should know that even the Dharma Body Bodhisattva, i.e., the higher level Bodhisattvas, must rely on the power of the Buddhas, not to mention ordinary beings such as ourselves, who are full of karmic obstructions. Who are we to keep weighing the pros and cons of our own strength, while failing to seek the Buddhas' help? Our words may be lofty, but upon reflection, the accompanying actions are low and wanting! The difference between other-power and self-power is as great as the heavens and the abyss! I hope fellow-cultivators will carefully examine and forgive my straightforward words.”

According to the Lotus Sutra, the law of origin is the teaching expressing the relationship between the Buddha and man, that is, the salvation of man through the Original Buddha. This salvation depends on the benevolence of the Buddha, and the benevolence is the essence of the Law of Origin. The Law of Origin declares that Sakyamuni Buddha has continually taught people throughout the universe since the infinite past. In other words, the Buddha is the truth of the universe, that is, the fundamental principle or the fundamental power causing all phenomena of the universe, including the sun, other stars, human beings, animals, plants, and so on, to live and move. Therefore, according to the Law of Origin, the Buddha has existed everywhere in the universe since its beginning. Methods of saving sentient beings or instruction in the Buddhist principlesAccording to the T’ien Tai Sect, the Buddha utilized four methods to save sentient beings. Fisrt, preaching in accordance with the Tripitaka Basket. Second, interrelated preaching. Third, differentiated preaching. Fourth, a complete, all-embracing preaching. The Dharma Door of Existence is one of the two doors for Pure Land practitioners. This is a Dharma Door that still relies on “Form Characteristics” to practice, because we sentient beings are still trapped in existence as well as in the six faculties of Eyes, Ears, Nose, Tongue, Body, and Mind; and the six elements of Form, Sound, Fragrance, Flavor, Touch and Dharma. Thus at every moment of our existence, our faculties are interacting with the various elements, so it is impossible for us to have “Emptiness” while facing the stimuli in our surroundings. The Pure Land method belongs to the Dharma Door of Existence; when Pure Land practitioners first develop the Bodhi Mind, they enter the Way through forms and marks and seek to view the celestial scenes of the Western Pure Land. There is also “The Dharma Door of Emptiness”, one of the two doors for Buddhist practitioners. This Dharma Door abandon the attchments to Form in order to cultivate. It is the ability to tame and master over the six faculties of Eyes, Ears, Nose, Tongue, Body, and Mind and is no longer enslaved and ordered around by the six elements of Form, Sound, Fragrance, Flavor, Touch and Dharma. Only Arhats and Bodhisattvas who have attained the state of “No Learning.” In the Zen School, practitioners enter the Way through the Dharma Door of Emptiness. With continuous Zen practices, practitioners can have true wisdom to wipe out all marks, even the marks of the Buddhas or the Dharma are destroyed. There is also the Dharma Door of Buddha Recitation. Although Buddha recitation is simple, it is very deep and encompassing. However, it is most important to be utterly sincere and earnest, for only then will your thoughts merge with those of Amitabha Buddha’s and can you reap true wisdom and benefits in this very life. If you are lazy and careless or lack of zealous energy, you may still sow the seeds of future liberation, but evil karma as a result of disrespect the Buddha teachings is inconceivable. However, thanks to the residual merits of reciting the name of Amitabha, you escape the three evil paths and are reborn in the human or celestial realms, but you will find it is very difficult to join the Ocean-Wide Lotus Assembly. According to Most Venerable Thích Thieàn Taâm in The Pure Land Buddhism, the Dharma methods are not, in themselves, high or low. It is only because the different natures and capacities of individuals that they have been categorized  as such. Sentient beings are at different levels of spiritual development, and therefore, various methods are required. Generally speaking, there are three main dharmar doors of Zen, Pure Land, and Tantrism (Mystic doctrines). However, here, we only mention about the simultaneous practices of Zen and Pureland that help practitioner attain the wisdom of emancipation. Devout Buddhists should always remember that sufferings and afflictions caused by ignorance, while the source of happiness and Nirvana is wisdom. For this reason, we must cultivate to transform these sufferings and afflictions into peace, mindfulness, happiness, and final goal of Nirvana. If we want to change direction away from greed, anger, delusion, arrogance, doubt, wrong views, killing, stealing, sexual misconducts, lying... the only way to achieve our goal is to attain a real wisdom. For with the real wisdom we can overcome the above mentioned ten evil robbers. The, our lives will become more pure and peaceful.

This little book titled “Simultaneous Cultivation of Zen & the Pure Land” is not a profound philosiphical study of Buddhist teachings, but a book that simply points out the Buddha's teachings on the benefits of the cultivation of meditation alongside cultivation of the Pure Land. Buddhist practitioners should always remember that Zen and Buddha are both Mind. Zen is the Zen of Buddha. Buddha is Buddha in Zen. Buddha Recitation does not conflict with koan or sitting meditation. Moreover, the meditator can use the words “Amitabha Buddha” as a koan, reciting forward, reciting backward, reciting in one direction, reciting in another, upside down, turning around, without leaving his current thought. Even if it is not called Zen, Zen is still part of it. The Zen practitioner, to succeed in his cultivation, must practice to the stage of “one thought in resonance with the Mind” or samadhi, and enter suddenly into the realm of Emptiness. To recite the Buddha’s name to the level of one-pointedness of mind, if this is not resonance (samadhi), what else can it be? To recite to the point where the mind is empty, is it not perpetual samadhi? In alert, focused Buddha recitation there is samatha, vipassana, samadhi, wisdom, each recitation is perfect. Where else can Zen be found if not here? As a Buddhist cultivator, you can apply any methods recommended by the Buddha; however, you must be very careful to choose the method that is most appropriate for you before you practice. Once you have chosen the most suitable method for you, you should stick to that method to the end. There a a lot of people with wandering thinking. Today they practice meditation, but tomorrow they hear that Buddha Recitation has a lot more merit and virtue, can leave relics and easily be reborn in the Pure Land... So they give up meditation and start reciting the Buddha’s name. Later, they hear the merit and virtue of reciting mantras is supreme, so they stop reciting the Buddha’s name and begin to recite the mantras. They keep changing the dharma-door, today this dharma door, and tomorrow the other dharma door. They end up achieving nothing but an exhausted body and mind. Sincere Buddhists should always be very careful in choosing a good teacher and dharma-door before starting the journey of going back to the Buddha-land. Devout Buddhists should also remember the goal of any Buddhist cultivator is to achieve the wisdom of liberation that helps us achieve the final accomplishment, to go beyond the cycle of births and deaths that is to reach the state of mind of a Nirvana right in this very life. The journey from man to Buddha still demands continuous efforts with right understanding and practice. Presently even with so many books available on Buddhism, I venture to compose this booklet titled “Simultaneous Cultivation of Zen & the Pure Land” in Vietnamese and English to spread basic things in Buddhism to all Vietnamese Buddhist followers, especially Buddhist beginners, hoping this little contribution will help Buddhists in different levels to understand on how to achieve and lead a life of peace, mindfulness and happiness.
