No Ấm: To be in comfort.

Noãn: Ấm—Warm—To warm.

Noãn Liêu: Còn gọi là Noãn Động, Noãn Tịch, hay Noãn Tự. Người mới vào tự viện được cúng dường hay được sắm sửa cho những thứ như trà, quả, vân vân. Cũng chỉ người mới vào phải mua sắm những thứ nầy để mời những người đã trụ tại đây từ trước—Presents of tea, fruit, etc., brought to a monastery, or offered to a new arrival.

Noãn Pháp: Pháp đầu tiên trong tứ gia hạnh; trong giai đoạn nầy hành giả chỉ trụ tâm nơi tứ diệu đế—The first of the four good roots; the stage in which dialetic processes are left behind and the mind dwells only on the four dogmas and sixteen disciplines.

Noãn Sanh: Những loài từ trứng mà sanh ra, một trong tứ sanh—Form of oviparous birth., as with birds, one of the four ways of coming into existence.

Nói Chuyện Vô Ích: Idle talk.

Nói Dối: Lying.

(A) Nghĩa của nói dối—The meanings of lying—See Ngũ Giới (4), Bất Vọng Ngữ, Bất Ỷ Ngữ, and Vọng Ngữ.

(B) Theo Đức PhậtPhật Pháp của Hòa Thượng Narada, có bốn điều kiện cần thiết để tạo nên nghiệp nói dối—According to The Buddha and His Teachings, there are four conditions that are necessary to complete the evil of lying:

1) Có sự giả dối không chân thật: An untruth.

2) Ý muốn người khác hiểu sai lạc sự thật: Deceiving intention.

3) Thốt ra lời giả dối: Utterance.

4) Tạo sự hiểu biết sai lạc cho người khác: Actual deception.

(C) Theo Đức PhậtPhật Pháp của Hòa Thượng Narada, có những hậu quả không tránh khỏi của sự nói dối—According to The Buddha and His Teachings, written by Most Venerable Narada, there are some inevitable consequences of lying as follow:

1) Bị mắng chưởi nhục mạ: Being subject to abusive speech.

2) Tánh tình đê tiện: Vilification.

3) Không ai tín nhiệm: Untrustworthiness.

4) Miệng mồm hôi thúi: Stinking mouth. 

Nói Dông Dài: To talk at length.

Nói Đúng: To speak accurately.

Nói Gạt: To mislead someone by lying.

Nói Gièm: To hint.

Nói Gở: To talk of bad omen.

Nói Hành: To backbite—To speak ill of someone.

Nói Hớt: To interrupt (intrude) in a conversation.

Nói Huyên Thuyên: Vacala or Vagvana (skt)—To talk too much—Chattering.

Nói Khác Làm Khác: Talking is one thing, but doing is another.

Nói Khe Khẽ: To speak in a low voice.

Nói Khích: To give someone encouragement.

Nói Khoác: To boast about—To brag.

Nói Lảng: To divert by speaking on another subject.

Nói Lắp Bắp: To stutter—To gabble.

Nói Lầm Bầm: Japati (p & skt)—See Nói Thầm.

Nói Lẩy: To talk in an aggressive tone.

Nói Lén: To talk secretly

Nói Leo: To interrupt adult.

Nói Lép Nhép: Vacata (skt)—Talkative.

Nói Liều: To speak thoughtlessly.

Nói Lịu: To repeat like a parrot.

Nói Lời Đâm Thọc: Pisunavaca (p).

(A) Nghĩa của nói lời đâm thọc—The meaning of “slander” or pisunavaca: Nói lời đâm thọc là có nói không, không nói có để gây chia rẽ—To slander means to twist stories.

(B) Theo Đức PhậtPhật Pháp của Hòa Thượng Narada, có bốn điều kiện cần thiết để thành lập nghiệp nói lời đâm thọc—According to The Buddha and His Teachings, written by Most Venerable Narada, there are four conditions that are necessary to complete the evil of slandering:

1) Những người là nạn nhân của sự chia rẽ: Persons that are to be divided.

2) Ý muốn phân ly những người ấy hay ý muốn lấy lòng một người: The intention to separate them or the desire to endear oneself to another.

3) Cố gắng để thực hiện sự phân ly: Corresponding effort.

4) Thốt ra lời nói đâm thọc: The communication.

(C) Theo Đức PhậtPhật Pháp của Hòa Thượng Narada, đây hậu quả không tránh khỏi của sự nói lời đâm thọc—According to The Buddha and His Teachings, there is one inevitable consequences of slandering: Bị chia rẽ với bạn bè—The dissolution of friendship without any sufficient cause.

Nói Lời Hung Ác: Harsh spech.

Nói Lời Nhảm Nhí: Samphappalapa (p)—Nói lời nhảm nhí vô ích—Frivolous talk.

(A) Theo Hòa Thượng Narada trong Đức PhậtPhật Pháp, có hai điều kiện cần thiết để thành lập nghiệp nói lời nhảm nhí vô ích—According to Most Venerable in The Buddha and His Teachings, there are two conditions that are necessary to complete the evil of frivolous talk:

1) Ý muốn nói chuyện nhảm nhí: The inclination towards frivolous talk.

2) Thốt ra lời nói nhảm nhí vô ích: Its narration.

(B) Theo Đức PhậtPhật Pháp của Hòa Thượng Narada, đây là những hậu quả không tránh khỏi của việc nói lời nhảm nhí—According to The Buddha and His Teachings, written by Most Venerable Narada, these are the inevitable consequences of frivolous talk:

1) Các bộ phận trong cơ thể bị khuyết tật: Defective bodily organs.

2) Lời nói không minh bạch rõ ràng (làm cho người ta nghi ngờ): Incredible speech. 

Nói Lời Thô Lỗ: Pharusavaca (p)—Lời nói thô lỗ cộc cằn—Harsh speech.

(A) Theo Hòa Thượng Narada trong Đức PhậtPhật Pháp, có ba điều kiện cần thiết để thành lập nghiệp nói lời thô lỗ—According to The Buddha and His Teaching, written by Most Venerable Narada, there are three conditions that are necessary to complete the evil of harsh speech:

1) Một người khác để cho ta nói lời thô lỗ: A person to be abused.

2) Tư tưởng sân hận: Angry thought.

3) Thốt ra lời thô lỗ: The actual abuse.

(B) Theo Đức PhậtPhật Pháp của Hòa Thượng Narada, đây là những hậu quả không tránh khỏi của sự nói lời thô lỗ cộc cằn—According to The Buddha and His Teachings, written by Most Venerable Narada, these are inevitable consequences of harsh speech:

1) Không làm gì hại ai cũng bị họ ghét bỏ: Being detested by others though absolutely harmless.

2) Tiếng nói khàn khàn, chứ không trong trẻo: Having a harsh voice. 

Nói Lớn Tiếng: To talk loud.

Nói Lưỡng Lự: To speak hesitatingly.

Nói Lưu Loát: To speak fluently

Nói Một Đường Làm Một Nẻo: To talk in one way and act in another way

Nói Một Mình: To speak (talk) to oneself.

Nói Ngập Ngừng: To speak in a hesitating way.

Nói Nghiêm Trang: To speak in earnest

Nói Nhây: To be everlastingly repeating the same story.

Nói Nhiều: Talkative.

Những lời Phật dạy về “Nói nhiều” trong Kinh Pháp Cú—The Buddha’s teachings on “Talkative” in the Dharmapada Sutra:

1. Chẳng phải cậy nhiều lời mà cho là người có trí, nhưng an tịnh không cừu oán, không sợ hãi mới là người có trí—A man is not called a learned man because he talks much. He who is peaceful, without hatred and fearless, is called learned and wise (Dharmapada 258).

2. Chẳng phải cậy nhiều lời mà cho là người hộ trì Chánh pháp, nhưng tuy ít học mà do thân thực thấy Chánh pháp, không buông lung, mới là người hộ trì Chánh pháp—A man is not called a guardian of the Dharma because he talks much. He who hears little and sees Dharma mentally, acts the Dharma well, and does not neglect the Dharma, is indeed, a follower in the Dharma (Dharmapada 259).

Nói Như Vẹt: To speak like a parrot. 

Nói Phách: To brag—To boast.

Nói Phớt Qua: To scratch the surface of the subject.

Nói Quàng Xiêng: Talk nonsense.

Nói Quanh: To beat about the bush.

Nói Sảng: To rave.

Nói Suồng Sã: To use familiar terms with a superior person or a stranger.

Nói Thẳng: To speak openly.

Nói Thầm:

1) Nói thầm: Japati (p & skt)—Nói lầm bầm—To murmur—To mutter—To speak to oneself—To whisper.

2) Đang nói thầm: Japanam (p)—Japa (skt)—Muttering—Whispering. 

Nói Thật: To tell (speak) the truth.

Nói Tỉ Mỉ: To tell all the details.

Nói Toạc Ra: To speak openly.

Nói Tốt: To speak well of someone.

Nói Trái Lại: To contracdict.

Nói Trôi Chảy: See Nói Lưu Loát.

Nói Trước: To speak first.

Nói Tục Tĩu: To use obsene language.

Nói Uổng Tiếng: To waste one’s words.

Nói Ứng Khẩu: To speak impromptu—To speak off-hand. 

Nói Vắn Tắt: To speak briefly.

Nói Xấu: Back biting.

Nô Bộc: A slave.

Nội: Antar, Antah, Pratyag, or Pratyak (skt)—Bên trong—Within—Inner—Internal—Inside—Interior—Inward.

Nội Bí: Tâm sâu kín bí mật bên trong của Bồ Tát, mặc dù bên ngoài có dáng vẻ của Thanh Văn—The inner mystic mind of the bodhisattva, though externally he may appears to be a sravaka (hearer—Thanh văn).

Nội Chúng: Chỉ Tăng chúng, để phân biệt với chúng tại gia hay là ngoại chúng—The inner company, i.e. the monks, in contrast with the laity (Ngọai tục).

Nội Chủng: Chủng tử được chứa đựng trong thức thứ tám, là căn bản của muôn ngàn hiện tượng—The seed contained in the eighth vijnana (Alaya-vijnana), the basis of all phenomena.

Nội Chữ: Các món ăn nấu trong Tăng phòng là một trong những món bất tịnh, do đó Tỳ Kheo không được ăn—Cooked food in a monastic bedroom, becoming thereby one of the unclean foods—See Nội túc thực.

Nội Chứng: Pratyak-sakshatkara or Antar-sakshatkriya (skt).

1) Nội Chứng: Inner assurance—Inner-realization—Inner experience—Inner witness.

2) Chân lý mà mình chứng được từ trong tâm: The witness of realization within—One’s own assurance of the truth.

Nội Chướng: Những chướng ngại xuất phát từ bên trong—The internal or mental hindrances or obstacles.

Nội Cung Phụng: Nội Cúng—Vị Tăng phụ trách bàn thờ trong đại nội (cung vua)—A title for the monk who served at the altar in the imperial palace.

Nội Cúng: See Nội Cung Phụng.

Nội Duyên: Ý thức trong tâm phân biệt các pháp khởi lên từ năm thức—The condition of perception arising from the five senses—Immediate, conditional or environmental causes, in contrast with the more remote.

Nội Điển: Giáo điển của Phật—Buddhist scriptures.

Nội Đạo Tràng: See Nội Tự.

Nội Giáo: Phật giáo, đối lại với ngoại tông—Buddhism, in contrast with other cults.

Nội Giới: Tâm ý—The realm of mind as contrast with that of the body (Ngoại giới).

Nội Học: Học Phật pháp—The inner learning (Buddhism).

Nội Huân: Inner censing—Primal ignorance or unenlightenment—Còn gọi là Minh Huân. Theo Khởi Tín Luận thì “nội huân” là bản giác huân tập vô minh trong tâm chúng sanh, nhân đó mà khiến vọng tâm chán nỗi khổ sinh tử, để cầu cảnh vui sướng của Niết Bàn—According to The Awakening of faith, inner censing acts upon original intelligence causes the common uncontrolled mind to resent the miseries of mortality and to seek nirvana—See Minh Huân.

Nội Khất: The bhiksu monk who seeks control from within himself (mental process, as compared with Ngoại Khất the one who aims at control by physical discipline such as observing moral disciplines, fasting, etc).

Nội Không: Empty within (no soul or self within).

Nội Ký: Người biên chép sổ sách hay sớ trong tự viện—The clerk or the writer of petitions, or prayer in a monastery.

Nội Ma Ngoại Ma: Internal demons and external demons. Nếu chúng ta để nội ma khởi dậy thì lập tức ngoại ma sẽ kéo đến phá nát công trình tu tập ngàn đời của ta—If we allow internal demons arise or spring up, external demons will immediately come to infiltrate to destroy our thousand years (lives after lives) of cultivation.

Nội Minh: Adhyatma-vidya (skt)—Một trong ngũ minh, nói về nội giáo của Phật pháp—A treatise on the inner meaning of Buddhism.

Nội Môn Chuyển: Tâm thức duyên vào pháp mà chuyển, chỉ hai thức bảy và tám trong bát thức—The psychological elements in the seventh and eighth consciousnesses (categories).

Nội Ngã: Chấp thân tâm của mình bảo đó là thường hằng, ngược lại với ngoại ngã là chấp tự tại thiên ngoài thân, coi đó là vị chúa tể—The antaratman or ego within—One’s own soul or self, in contrast with bahiratman (ngoại ngã/an external soul or personal or divine ruler).

Nội Ngoại: Internal and external—Subjective and objective.

Nội Ngoại Đạo:

1) Nội giáongoại giáo: Within and without the religion—Buddhists and non-Buddhists.

2) Ngoại đạo trong nội đạo: Heretics within the religion.

Nội Ngoại Không:

1) Khoảng không bên trong và bên ngoài.

2) Căn bên trong và trần bên ngoài đều không thật—The space inside and outside—Internal organ and external object are both unreal, or not material.

Nội Ngoại Kiêm Minh: Nội ngoại đều sáng. Trong ngũ minh thì bốn minh đầu là ngoại minh, minh thứ năm là nội minh—Inner and outer both “bright,” the first four of the Pancavidya are “outer” and the fifth “inner.”

Nội Ngoại Pháp: Bahyamdhyamaka (skt)—Các pháp bên trong và bên ngoài—External and internal dharmas.

1) Nội Pháp: Thế giới bên trong—Internal Dharmas or internal world.

2) Ngoại Pháp: Bahyabhava (skt)—Thế giới bên ngoài—External world—Trong Kinh Lăng Già, Đức Phật dạy: “Phật tử muốn được thanh tịnh, phải tu tập bằng cách không chấp vào sự hiện hữu hay phi hiện hữu của ngoại pháp.”—In the Lankavatara Sutra, the Buddha taught: “Buddhists who want to be purified, must not cling to the existence or non-existence of an external world.”

Nội Phàm: See Phàm Phu (2) (a).

Nội Pháp: Buddhism, in contrast with other religions (Ngoại pháp).

Nội Sứ: The clerk or writer of petitions.

Nội Tâm: Insight—The mind or heart within.

Nội Tâm Mạn Đà La: Bí Mật Mạn Đà La—Mạn Đà La trung tâm trong kinh Đại Nhựt hay là Trung Tòa trong Kim Cang Liên Hoa Giới—The central heart madala of the Vairocana Sutra, or the central throne in the diamond realm lotus.

Nội Tề: See Nội Tự.

Nội Thai: Bên trong thai tạng giới hay là tám vật trong tám cánh hoa ở trung tâm của mạn đà la—The inner Garbhadhatu or the eight objects in the eight leaves in the central group of the mandala.

Nội Thức: Tâm thức đối với ngoại cảnh—Internal perception.

Nội Tình: Hoàn cảnh hay tình hình bên trong—Internal situation.

Nội Trần: Antar-guna or Antar-alambana (skt)—Inner mental objects—Nội trần là những pháp sở duyên với ý thức (mind consciousness), còn pháp sở duyên với năm thức là ngoại trần—The inner six gunas (the inner dusts), associated with mind, in contrast with the other five gunas, qualities or attributes of the visible, audible, etc.

Nội Trận: Phần trước bàn thờ nơi chư Tăng ngồi làm lễ—The inner ranks, the part of the altar where the monks sit.

Nội Triền: Inner tangle (network of craving).

Nội Túc Thực: Thực phẩm dành cho các vị Tỳ Kheo, để qua một đêm trong phòng thì gọi là nội túc thực, do đó là một trong những món ăn bất tịnh, Tỳ Kheo không được ăn—Food that has been kept overnight in a monastic bedroom and is therefore one of the unclean foods.

Nội Tự: Nội Đạo Tràng—Tháp Phật hay tự viện trong cung, nơi chư Tăng tề tựu về hành lễ trong ngày sanh nhật của nhà vua—The Buddhist shrines or temples in the palace where Buddhist ceremonies in the palace on the emperor’s birthday.

Nội Viện: Thiện pháp đường hay nội đường của cung Trời Đâu Suất, nơi Phật Di Lặc ngồi thuyết giảng—The inner court of the Tusita heaven, where Maitreya dwells and preaches.

Nội Vô Vi: Inner quiescence.

Nội Y: Antaravasaka (skt)—Một trong ba loại y mà chư Tăng Ni thường mặc bên trong—One of the three regulation garments of a monk—The inner garment.

Nông:

1) Cạn: Shallow—Not deep.

2) Nhà nông: Farmer—Agriculture—Farming.

3) Thủ đà la: Giai cấp thấp nhứt ở Ấn Độ trong thời Đức Phật còn tại thế—Sudra caste, the lowest class in India at the time of the Buddha.

Nơï: To owe.

Nợ Đời: Debt of nature.

Nợ Lút Đầu: Deep in debt—Sunk in debt.

Nợ Nần: Dents.

Nợ Nhà: Duty towards one’s family

Nợ Nước: Duty towards one’s country

Nơi Khác: Elsewhere.

Nơi Sinh: Birthplace.

Nới: To loosen.

Bài viết này chỉ là những suy nghĩ rời. Nói theo ngôn ngữ thường dùng là viết theo thể văn tản mạn. Nghĩa là, không phải sắp xếp, lý luận theo một hệ thống. Bài viết khởi lên từ cuộc nói chuyện rời trong khi ngồi trên xe của nhạc sĩ Tâm Nhuận Phúc Doãn Quốc Hưng từ Quận Cam tới tham dự một Phật sự tại Riverside, California.
Có rất nhiều thông tin trái ngược nhau về đậu nành: Nó có tốt cho sức khỏe không? Nó có nguy hiểm không? Và nếu ăn được thì tại sao một số người lại nói là không?
Là Phật tử, ai cũng muốn tìm hiểu Đạo Phật để thực hành cho đúng đắn ; nhưng Phật Giáo thật mênh mông, như lá cây trong rừng : học cái chi đây ? bắt đầu từ đâu ? Cả đời người chắc cũng không học hết được. Mỗi người tùy theo phương tiện, chí hướng, ý thích, điều kiện, mà đặt trọng tâm trên một hay vài địa hạt nghiên cứu.
