When Prince Siddhartha was born, King Shuddhodana asked Asita to examine the newborn child’s physiognomy. The old sage uttered blesings for the Prince. After divination, tears dropped from his eyes. King Suddhodana was puzzled and asked the old sage why he swept. The old sage told the King: “The Prince has all the transcendental looks of a Great Man. He has thirty-two great features of a great man. If he leads a religious life, he will attain Enlightenment and become a Teacher of men and devas. If he succeeds to the throne, he would most certainly be a ruler of the four domains and would become a rare Holy King. But it is a pity that I am too old and cannot live to see the Prince attain Enlightenment. So I am overcome by a sense of sadness.” (Asita foretold that if the boy remained in the secular world, he would become a wheel-turning (supreme) king by the age of twenty nine, but if he renounced the secular life, which was more probable, he would achieve supreme wisdom and attain Buddhahood). After hearing the prediction of the old sage, King Suddhodana was filled with both joy and sorrow. A Tư Đà tâu vua Tịnh Phạn: “Thái tử có tướng mạo phi phàm. Hai trụ còn lại được tìm thấyBa Liên Phất, một ở phía Nam tháp A Dục Vương (see A Dục Vương Tháp), và một tại thành Địa Ngục do chính vua A Dục xây. Trụ đá ở thành Địa Ngục tại Ba Liên Phất cũng có một con sư tử trên đỉnh—Asoka Marble Pillars, erected by Indian king of Asoka in about 250 B.C. in Lumbini garden in present-day Nepal and all over the lace in India, to show that the Buddha was born here in 624 B.C., periods when the Buddha travelled all over India to preach his doctrines, and Asoka’s support of Buddhism. According to Fa-Hsien in the Unassuming Pilgrim (his journey to India), he only recorded six pillars. One was erected behind the temple built by king Asoka at Sankasya, on the spot where the Buddha descended from Trayastrimsa Heaven. According to Buddhist legends, here once there was a heretics who came to challenge the monks the right to live here. At the time, the monks were defeated in arguments and prayed together: “If this place is for the monks to live, please show some miracles.” Right after the vow, the lion on the top of the pillar roared loudly. The heretics frightened and went away. Two other pillars stood at Sravasta, 1,200 paces from the southern gate of the Jetavana Vihara, in front of two rooms. One other pillar was erected in Vaisali, at the place where the Buddha gave his alms-bowl to the Licchavis as a relic when he left Vaisali for Kusinara. According to Buddhist legends, the Licchavis in Vaisali wished to follow the Buddha to his place of Parinirvana, but the Buddha did not agree and they would not go away. The Buddha had to use his supernatural powers to make appeared a deep ditch that they could not pass. Then the Buddha gave them his begging bowl as a token of faith and sent them back. The stone pillar was erected by King Asoka right over this place. The rest two pillars were found in Pataliputra, one to the south of Asoka Stupa, and the other at the city of Niraya, built by Asoka himself. Among these six pillars, three pillars had inscriptions on them. The one near the Asoka Stupa had these lines: “King Asoka offered Jambudvipa to the Sangha from all parts of the world, then redeemed it again. And this, he did three times.” The other stupa, also at Pataliputra had also an inscription, but Fa-Hsien did not quote it. He mentioned simply that an inscription of this pillar related the reason for building it and the year, the month and the day of its erection. The third stupa with inscriptions was erected at Vaisali, but here Fa-Hsien mentioned simply that a store pillar with inscriptions was erected there. Of the six pillars Fa-Hsien recorded the height of only three stupa. The stone pillar at Sankasya was thirty feet high. The stone pillar to the south of Asoka Stupa measured more than 30 feet high (may be he used Chinese foot) and fourteen or fifteen feet in circumference, while the pillar at the city of Hell measured also more than thirty feet high. Four pillars had images as decorative designs. On the top of the left pillar in front of Jevatana Vihara stood the image of a wheel, while the right pillar had an image of an ox. The pillar at Sankasya had the image of a lion on its top. All four sides of the pillar were shinning like glass. The Buddha’s images were carved. The pillar in the city of Hell at Pataliputra had also a lion on its top.

1) World Voice-Seeing Bodhisattva, one of the great bodhisattvas of the Mahayana Buddhism. Avalokitesvara contemplates the sound of the world. She can manifest herself in any conceivable form to bring help wherever it is needed. Bodhisattva of compassion and deep listening. Also called Kuan Shi Yin, the Bodhisattva of compassion. One of the three Pure Land Sages (Buddhas and Bodhisattvas). The others being Buddha Amitabha and Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta (Đại Thế Chí Bồ Tát)—Bồ Tát Quán Thế Âm, một trong những vị Bồ tát lớn của trường phái Phật giáo Đại thừa. Quán Thế Âm tầm thinh cứu khổ, thị hiện trong những hình thức không thể nghĩ bàn hầu đem sự gia hộ đến tới bất cứ nơi nào cần Ngài. Cũng còn được gọi là Đại Bi Quan Thế Âm Bồ Tát, một trong ba vị Phật và Bồ Tát của Tây Phương Tịnh Độ, hai vị kia là Phật A Di ĐàBồ Tát Đại Thế Chí

2) Among Buddhism mythological works, works on Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva are the most outstanding. By the power of his magic, and by his infinite care and skill he affords safety to those who are anxious. The word Avalokitesvara is a compound of the word “ishvara” means “Lord or Sovereign,” and of “avalokita” which means he who looks down with compassion, i.e., on beings suffering in this world: Trong những tác phẩm thần thoại về Phật giáo thì thần thoại về Đức Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát là độc đáo nhất.

3) According to Edward Conze in Buddhism: Its Essence and Development, Avalokitesvara personifies compassion. The texts and images suggest that in India one may distinguish three stages in his development—Theo Edward Conze trong Tinh Hoa và Sự Phát Triển của Đạo Phật, Quán Thế Âmlòng từ bi nhân cách hóa.

a) At first, he is a member of a trinity, consisting of Amitayus, Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta. This Trinity has many counterparts in Iranian religion, i.e., in the Mithras cult and Zervanism, a Persian religion which recognized Infinite Time (Zervan Akarana=Amita-ayus) as the fundamental principle. Assimilated by Buddhism, Avalokitesvara becomes a great Bodhisattva, so great that he is nearly as perfect as a Buddha. He possesses a great miraculous power to help in all kinds of dangers and difficulties: Trước hết, Ngài là một phần của “Tam Vị Nhất Thể” gồm Vô Lượng Thọ, Quán Thế ÂmĐại Thế Chí.

b) In the second stage, Avalokitesvara acquires a number of cosmic functions and features. He hold the world in his hand, he is immensely big, 800,000 myriads of miles, each of the pores of his skin conceals a world system. hE is the Lord and Sovereign of the world. From his eyes come the sun and the moon, from his mouth the winds, from his ffet the earth. In all these respects, Avalokitesvara resembles the Hindu God, Brahma: Ở giai đoạn thứ hai, Quán Thế Âm thủ đắc một số chức vụ và tính chất vũ trụ.

c) Finally, in the third stage, at a time when the magical elements of Buddhism come to the fore, he becomes a great magician who owes his power to his mantras, and he adopts many of the characteristics of Siva.
