He was born in 623 BC in the Lumbini Park at Kapilavathu, North of India, on the Vesak Fullmoon day of April. His father, Suddhodana, was the ruler of the Kingdom of the Sakyas, which is now Nepal. His mother was queen Maya. He was married at the age of sixteen to a beautiful young princess named Yasodhara. However, at the age of twenty-nine, soon after the birth of his only child, Rahula, he left his kingdom and became a homeless ascetic in search of the true happiness for all beings. Six years later, after going through a lot of different ascetic practices, he attained Enlightenment at the age of 35 under a tree known as Bodhi-tree, on the bank of Neranjara at Buddha-Gaya—Có rất nhiều vị Phật trong vũ trụ. He was not born enlightened; however, efforts after efforts, he became enlightened. Any beings who sincerely try can also be freed from all clingings and become enlightened as the Buddha. All Buddhists should be aware that the Buddha was not a god or any kind of supernatural being. Like us, he was born a man. The differnce between the Buddha and an ordinary man is simply that the former has awakened to his Buddha nature while the latter is still deluded about it. However, whether we are awakened or deluded, the Buddha nature is equally present in all beings— Chữ Phật không phải là một danh từ riêng mà là một từ có nghĩa là “Bậc Giác Ngộ” hay “Bậc Đại Giác.”

Buddha’s body: Thân Phật—A lot of people think of the Buddha’s body as his physical body. Truly, the Buddha’s body means Enlightenment. It is formless and without substance. It always has been and always will be. It is not a physical body that must be nourished by ordinary food. It is an eternal body whose substance is Wisdom. Therefore, Buddha will never disappear as long as Enlightenment exists. Enlightenment appears as the light of Wisdom that awakens people into a newness of life and causes them to be born into the world of Buddhas—Nhiều người nghĩ thân Phật là nhục thân của Ngài.

Buddha’s Birthday: Ngày Phật Đản Sanh—The Buddha’s birthday was the day of the full moon in May. It was a beautiful day. The weather was nice and a gentle breeze was blowing. All the flowers in the Lumbini Park were blooming, emitting fragrant scents, and all the birds were singing molodious songs. Together, they seemed to have created a fairy land on earth to celebrate the birth of the Prince, a coming Buddha. According to the Indian legendaries, at that time, the earth shook, and from the sky, two silvery currents of pure water gushed down, one was warm and the other cool, which bathed the body of the Prince—Ngày Phật đản sanh là ngày trăng tròn tháng 5.

The Bhiksus were afraid that he might cause disturbance and stopped him from entering to see the Buddha, but the Buddha agreed to received him. The Buddha told Subhada: “Those who practice the way should recognize the three Dharma Seals for testing the Truth (1. Emptiness of all dharmas or emptiness of separate selfhood, 2. Impermanence of all phenomena, and 3. Nirvana and Tranquil Extinction). So long as you practice the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Noble Path, and the Twelve Links of Causation, you will obtain release and liberation.”

You should observe and practice according to my teachings.” Ananda and others then consulted the Buddha on four things—Khi ngày Phật nhập diệt sắp gần kề, chư Tỳ kheo bịn rịn khôn nguôi. Buddhist Councils: See Kết Tập Kinh Điển—Các hội nghị Phật giáo. Có bốn hội nghị trong lịch sử Phật giáo—In the development of Buddhism, four councils are known:

1) The First Council—Hội nghị thứ nhất: First council convoked by Mahakashyapa in the vicinity of Rajagriha right after Buddha’s Parinirvana. Mahakashyapa questioned Upali concerning the rules of discipline and Ananda concerning the doctrine. On the basis of Upali’s responses the Vinaya-Pitaka was set down, and on the basis of Ananda’s the Sutra-Pitaka. The text, upon which all had agreed, was then recited. In the Records of Fa-Hsien, he also reported the two Buddhist Councils and his narrative although brief, but may be more accurate than that of Hsuan-Tsang. He recorded: “Five to six li (Chinese mile) further west, in the cave of Saptaparna. Right after the Buddha’s Parinirvana, 500 Arhats made a compilation of Sacred Scriptures. During the time of recital three high seats were set up, nicely arranged and adorned. Mahakasyapa in the middle, Sariputra on the left and Maudgalyayana on the right. Of the five hundred Arhats, one was missing. Mahakasyapa presided the Council while Ananda stood outside the gate because he was not able to gain permission—Hội nghị đầu tiên do Ma Ha Ca Diếp triệu tập, diễn ra tại thành Vương xá ngay sau khi Phật nhập diệt.

2) The Second—The second council was held in Vaishali, in 386 BC, about a century after the first one. It is considerably better documented in the texts than the first and is generally recognized as a historical event. The reason for the convocation of this council was disunity concerning matter of discipline between monks in Vaishali and disciples of Ananda’s. Monks in Vaishali had accepted gold and silver from lay adherents in violation of the Vinaya rules. Monks in Vaishali were also accused by Yasha, a student of Ananda’s, of nine other violations, including taking food at the wrong time, drinking alcohol, etc. On the other side, monks from Vaishali expelled Yasha from the community because of his accusations. Yasha then sought support from other influential monks and that was why the council was convoked. The council composed of 700 monks, all arhat, took place in Vaishali. The monks of Vaishali were found guilty by a committee of four senior monks. Monks from Vaishali accepted the judgment of the Council. In the Records of Fa-Hsien, he recorded: “Three or four li further east of Vaisali stands a Stupa. Hundred years after the Buddha’s Parinirvana, some monks in Vaisali practiced ten rules against the monastic disciplines, contending that the Buddha had decreed these practices. At that time, the Arhats and monks who obsereved the rules, 700 in all, checked and collated the Vinaya Pitaka. People of later generations erected a Stupa over this place, which still exists.”—Hội nghị thứ hai: Hội nghị thứ hai được diễn ra tại thành Vaishali, vào năm 386 BC, tức là khoảng một thế kỷ sau hội nghị thứ nhứt.

3) The Third Council—Hội nghị thứ ba: There are no records of this council in the Vinaya-Pitaka. The reason for the convocation of this council was a disagreement over the nature of an arhat. A monk from Pataliputra, Mahadeva, put forward that an arhat is still subject to temptation and he is not yet free from ignorance; he is still subject to doubts concerning teaching. Also according to Mahadeva, an arhat can make progress on the path to enlightenment through the help of others. These differing views led to the division of the monks and the third council was convoked. However, the council only confirmed the differences instead of reconciling these differences. The Pali school in Ceylon did not accept this council. They accepted the council convoked by King Asoka in 244 BC. The reason for the convocation of the council in 244 BC was a conflict between monks regarding the entering the order of two kinds of monks: 1) who entered to practice Buddhism—2) others who entered to enjoy certain privileges.

4) The Fourth Council—Hội nghị thứ tư: This council had been convoked by the school of Sarvastivadin, under the reign of King Kanishka with the purpose to prevent the reformatory tendencies in the community. There were 500 arhats and 600 bodhisattvas attended this council. Later because of the great importance attained by the Sarvastivadin, this council was recognized as a Buddhist council—Đúng hơn đây chỉ là hội nghị của trường phái Sarvastivadin, được diễn ra dưới triều vua Kanishka, nhằm ngăn ngừa một số cải cách bên trong Tăng đoàn.
