Faith means to have faith that Amitabha Buddha is always protecting and will readily rescue and deliver any sentient being who knows to respect and recite sincerely His name.

Tín Chủng: Hạt giống của lòng tin—The seed of faith.

Tín Cổ: Âm thanh của trống hay chuông khánh là phương tiện giữ được niềm tin—The drum or stimulant of faith.

Tín Đạo: Faith as the first and leading step.

Tín Địa: Belief or the faith root.

Phía Bắc rộng, phía Nam hẹp, giống như hình bán nguyệt. Thời tiết rất nóng và ẩm. Kinh thành là Tì Tham Bà Bổ La (Vichavapura)—In the T’ang dynasty, its territory is described as extending over 90,000 miles in circuit, being bounded on three sides by the sea; north is rested on the Snow Mountain (Himalaya); wide at north, narrowing to the south, shaped like a half-moon. It eas extremely hot, well watered and damp. Its capital was Vichavapura.

Tín Giải:

1) Tin và hiểu giáo lý nhà Phật: Faith and interpretation—To believe and understand or explain the doctrine.

2) Độn căn thì tin, lợi căn thì hiểu: The dull or unintellectual belief.

3) Tín phá tà kiến, giải phá vô minh: Faith rids of heresy, interpretation of ignorance.

Tín Giải Hành Chứng: Trước tiên là tin vui theo pháp, hiểu rõ pháp; sau đó y theo pháp mà tu hành, và cuối cùng chứng đắc được quả vị Phật—Faith, interpretation, performance, and evidence or realization of the fruit of Buddha’s doctrine.

Tín Hành:

1) Niềm tin và hành động: Believing action—Faith and practice.

Tín hành dành cho người độn căn, trong khi pháp hành dành cho kẻ lợi căn: Action resulting from faith (for those of inferior ability)—Practice based on belief, in contrast with action resulting from direct apprehension of the doctrine; the former is found among the inferior ability, the latter among the mentally acute.

Tuy nhiên, đây là nói về các bậc thượng căn, còn chúng ta là những kẻ hạ căn, phước mỏng nghiệp dầy, muốn vãng sanh Cực Lạc thì phải có đủ cả Tín Hạnh Nguyện, nghĩa là đầy đủ hết cả hai phần Lý và Sự—According to the Ninth Patriarch of Pureland Buddhism, the Great Master Ou-I: “If Faith and Vow are solidified, when nearing death, it is possible to gain rebirth by reciting the Buddha’s name in ten recitations. In contrast, no matter how much one recites Buddha, if Faith and Vow are weak and deficient, then this will result only in reaping the merits and blessings in the Heavenly or Human realms.” However, this teaching only applies to beings with higher faculties. As for us, beings with low faculties, thin blessings and heavy karmas; if we wish to gain rebirth to the Ultimate Bliss World, we must have Faith, Practices and Vow. In other words, we must carry out both parts of Theory and Practice.

(A) Tín: Faith—See Tín, and Lục Tín.

(B) Hạnh: Practice.

a) See Hạnh.

According to Most Venerable Thích Thiền Tâm in The Thirteen Patriarchs of Pureland Buddhism, with point of view from the Pureland, practice means to take action or make application of the teaching. This means to recite often the virtuous name “Namo Amitabha Buddha” without distraction and without chaos throughout one’s life.

(C) Nguyện: Vow.

a) See Nguyện.

Trong ba điều tín hạnh nguyện nầy, người tu tịnh nghiệp bắt buộc cần phải có đủ, không được thiếu sót một điều; tuy nhiên, nguyện là điều cần thiết nhất: According to Most Venerable Thích Thiền Tâm in The Thirteen Patriarchs of Pureland Buddhism, with point of views of the Pureland, vow is with each thought that arises, there is a “love and yearning” to gain rebirth in the Ultimate Bliss World, and with each thought, there is a “wish and prayer” To achieve a place in the nine-levels of Golden Lotus. In these three components of faith, practice, and vow, it is absolutely essential for the Pureland cultivator to have all three; however, vow is the most important.

Suzuki in the Essays in Zen Buddhism, Book I, the third patriarch lived most of his life as a hermit (obscure), his thought is gleaned from a metrical composition known as Hsin-Hsin-Ming or ‘Inscribed on the Believing Mind’.

Đạo lớn chẳng gì khó,

cốt đừng chọn lựa thôi.

Quí hồ không thương ghét,

tự nhiên ngời sáng.

(Chí đạo vô nan, duy hiềm giản trạch.

Đản mạc tắng ái, đồng nhiên minh bạch).

The Perfect Way knows no dificulties

Except that it refuses to make preference:

Only when freed from hate and love,

It reveals itself fully and without disguise.

Sai lạc nửa đường tơ,

đất trời liền phân cách.

Chớ nghĩ chuyện ngược xuôi,

thì hiện liền trước mắt

(Hào li hữu sai, Thiên địa huyền cách.

Dục đắc hiện tiền, Mạc tồn thuận nghịch).

A tenth of an inch’s difference,

And heaven and earth are set apart:

If you want to see it manifest,

Take no thought either for or against it.

Đem thuận nghịch chỏi nhau,

Đó chính là tâm bịnh.

Chẳng nắm được mối huyền,

Hoài công lo niệm tịnh.

(Vi thuận nghịch tương tranh, thị vi tâm bịnh

Bất thức huyền chỉ, đồ lao niệm tịnh).

To set up what you like

against what you dislike.

This is the disease of the mind:

When the deep meaning of the Way

Is not understood.

Peace of mind is disturbed

and nothing is gained.

 Tròn đầy tự thái hư,

Không thiếu cũng không dư.

 Bởi mãi lo giữ bỏ,

Nên chẳng được như như.

(Viên đồng thái hư, vô khiếm vô dư

Lương do thủ xả, sở dĩ bất như).

The Way is perfect like unto vast space,

 With nothing wanting, nothing superfluous:

It is indeed due to making choice

That its suchness is lost sight of.

 Ngoài chớ đuổi duyên trần,

 Trong đừng ghì không nhẫn.

 Cứ một mực bình tâm,

 Thì tự nhiên dứt tận.

(Mạc trục hữu duyên, vật trụ không nhẫn

Nhứt chủng bình hoài, dẫn nhiên tự tận).

 Pursue not the outer entanglements,

 Dwell not in the inner void;

 When the mind rests serene

In the oneness of things,

The dualism vanishes by itself.

And when oneness is not thoroughly understood,

In two ways loss is sustained.

The denial of reality may lead to its absolute negation,

While the upholding of the void may result in contradicting itself.

 Nói nhiều thêm lo quẩn,

 Loanh quanh mãi chẳng xong.

 Dứt lời dứt lo quẩn,

 Đâu đâu chẳng suốt thông.

(Đa ngôn đa lự, chuyển bất tương ưng

Tuyệt ngôn tuyệt lự, vô xứ bất thông).

Wordiness and intellection

The more with them the further astray we go

away; therefore, with wordiness and intellection, there is no place where we cannot pass freely.

 Trở về nguồn nắm mối

 Dõi theo ngọn mất tông

 Phút giây soi ngược lại

 Trước mắt vượt cảnh không.

(Qui căn đắc chỉ, tùy chiếu thất tông

Tu du phản chiếu, thắng khước tiền không).

When we return to the root, we gain the meaning. When we pursue the external objects, we lose the reason. The moment we are enlightened within; we go beyond the voidness of a world confronting us.

 Cảnh không trò thiên diễn

 Thảy đều do vọng kiến

 Cứ gì phải cầu chơn

 Chỉ cần dứt sở kiến

(Tiền không chuyển biến, giai do vọng kiến

Bất dụng cầu chơn, duy tu tức kiến).

Transformations going on in an empty world which confronts us. Appear real all because of ignorance: Try not to seek after the true, only cease to cherish opinions.

 Hai bên đừng ghé mắt

 Cẩn thận chớ đuổi tầm

 Phải trái vừa vướng mắc

 Là nghiền đốt mất tâm.

(Nhị kiến bất trụ, thận vật truy tầm

Tài hữu thị phi, phấn nhiên thất tâm).

Tarry not with dualism, carefully avoid pursuing it; as soon as you have right or wrong, confusion ensues, the mind is lost.

 Hai do một mà có

 Một rồi cũng buông bỏ

 Một tâm ví chẳng sanh

 Muôn pháp tội gì đó.

(Nhị do nhứt hữu, nhứt diệc mạc thủ

Nhứt tâm bất sinh, vạn pháp vô cữu).

The two exists because of the one, but hold not even to this one; when the one mind is not disturbed, the ten thousand things offer no offence.

 Không tội thì không pháp

 Chẳng sanh thì chẳng tâm

 Tâm theo cảnh mà bặt

 Cảnh theo tâm mà chìm.

(Vô cữu vô pháp, bất sanh bất tâm

Năng tùy cảnh diệt, cảnh trục năng trầm).

When no offence is offered by them, they are as if not existing; when the mind is not disturbed, it is as if there is no mind. The subject is quieted as the object ceases, the object ceases as the subject is quieted.

 Tâm là tâm của cảnh

 Cảnh là cảnh của tâm

 Vì biết hai đằng dứt

 Rốt cùng chỉ một không.

(Cảnh do năng cảnh, năng do cảnh năng

Dục tri lưỡng đoạn, nguyên thị nhứt không)

The object is an object for the subject, the subject is a subject for an object: Know that the relativity of the two; rests ultimately on the oneness of the void.

 Một không, hai mà một

 Bao gồm hết muôn sai

 Chẳng thấy trong thấy đục

 Lấy gì mà lệch sai.

(Nhứt không đồng lưỡng, tề hàm vạn tượng

Bất kiến tinh thô, ninh hữu thiên đảng).

In the oneness of the void the two are one,

And each of the two contains in itself all the ten thousand things: When no discrimination is made between this and that, how can one-sided and prejudiced view arise?

 Đạo lớn thể khoan dung

 Không dễ mà không khó

 Kẻ tiểu kiến lừng khừng

 Gấp theo và chậm bỏ.

(Đại đạo thể khoan, vô dị vô nan

Tiểu kiến hồ nghi, chuyển cấp chuyên trì).

The Great Way is calm and large-minded,

Nothing is easy, nothing is hard:

Small views are irresolute,

The more in haste the tardier they go.

 Chấp giữ là nghiêng lệch

 Dấn tâm vào nẻo tà

 Cứ tự nhiên buông hết

 Bổn thể chẳng qua lại.

(Chấp chi thất độ, tâm nhập tà lộ

Phóng chi tự nhiên, thể vô khứ trụ).

Clinging never keeps itself within bounds,

It is sure to go in the wrong way:

Let go loose, and things are as they may be,

While the essence neither departs nor abides.

 Thuận tánh là hiệp đạo

 Tiêu dao dứt phiền não

 Càng nghĩ càng trói thêm

 Lẽ đạo chìm mê mãi.

(Nhiệm tánh hiệp đạo, tiêu dao tuyệt não

Hệ niệm quai chơn, trầm hôn bất hảo).

Obey the nature of things,

and you are in concord with the Way.

Calm and easy and free from annoyance;

But when your thoughts are tied,

you turn away from the truth.

They grow heavier and duller

and are not at all sound.

 Mê ảo nhọc tinh thần

 Tính gì việc sơ thân

 Muốn thẳng đường nhứt thặng

 Đừng chán ghét sáu trần.

(Bất hảo lao thần, hà dụng sơ thân

Dục thú nhứt thặng, vật ố lục trần).

When they are not sound, the soul is troubled;

What is the use of being partial and one-sided then? If you want to walk the course of the One Vehicle, be not prejudiced against the six sense-objects.

 Sáu trần có xấu chi

 Vẫn chung về giác đấy

 Bậc trí giự vô vi

 Người ngu tự buộc lấy.

(Lục trần bất ác, hoàn đồng chánh giác

Trí giả vô vi, ngu nhơn tự phược).

When you are not prejudiced against the six sense-objects, you in turn identify yourself with enlightenment; the wise are non-active, while the ignorant bind themselves up;

 Pháp pháp chẳng khác pháp

 Do ái trước sanh lầm

 Há chẳng là quấy lắm

 Sai tâm đi bắt tâm.

(Pháp vô dị pháp, vọng tự ái trước

Tương tâm dụng tâm, khởi phi đại thác).

While the Dharma itself there is no individuation, they ignorantly attach themselves to particular objects. It is their own minds that create illusions. It is not the greatest of self-contradictions?

 Mê sanh động sanh yên

 Ngộ hết xấu hết tốt

 Hết thảy việc hai bên

 Đều do vọng châm chước.

(Mê sanh tịnh loạn, ngộ vô hảo ác

Hết thảy nhị biên, vọng tự châm chước).

Ignorance begets the dualism of rest and unrest, the enlightened have no likes and dislikes: All forms of dualism are ignorantly contrived by the mind itself.

 Mơ mộng hão không hoa

 Khéo nhọc lòng đuổi bắt

 Chuyện thua được thị phi

 Một lần buông bỏ quách.

(Mộng huyễn không hoa, hà lao bả tróc

Đắc thất thị phi, nhứt thời phóng khước).

They are like unto visions and flowers in the air: Why should we trouble ourselves to take hold of them? Gain and loss, right and wrong, away with them once for all!

 Mắt ví không mê ngủ

 Mộng mộng đều tự trừ

Tâm tâm ví chẳng khác

 Thì muôn pháp nhứt như.

(Nhãn nhược bất thụy, chư mộng tự trừ

Tâm nhược bất dị, vạn pháp nhứt như).

If an eye never falls asleep, all dreams will by themselves cease: If the mind retains its oneness, the ten thousand things are of one suchness.

 Nhứt như vốn thể huyền

 Bằn bặt không mảy duyên

 Cần quán chung như vậy

Muôn pháp về tự nhiên.

(Nhứt như thể huyền, ngột nhĩ vọng duyên

Vạn pháp tề quán, qui phục tự nhiên).

When the deep mystery of one suchness is fathomed, all of a sudden we forget the external entanglements: When the ten thousand things are viewed in their oneness, we return to the origin and remain what we are.

 Đừng hỏi vì sao cả

 Thì hết chuyện sai ngoa

 Ngăn động chưa là tịnh

 Cái hai đà chẳng được

 Cái một lấy chi mà.

(Dẫn kỳ sở dĩ, bất khả phương tỷ

Chỉ động vô động, động chỉ vô chỉ

Lưỡng ký bất thành, nhứt hà hữu nhĩ).

Forget the wherefore of things, and we attain to a state beyond analogy: Movement stopped is no movement, and rest set in motion is not rest. When dualism does no more obtain, even oneness itself remains not as such.

 Rốt ráo đến cùng cực

 Chẳng còn mảy qui tắc

 Bình đẳng hiệp đạo tâm

 Im bặt niềm tạo tác.

(Cứu cánh cùng cực, bất tồn quĩ tắc

Khế tâm bình đẳng, sở tác câu tức).

The ultimate end of things where they cannot go any further, is not bound in harmony with the Way is the principle of identity in which we find all doings in a quiescent state;

 Niềm nghi hoặc lắng dứt

 Lòng tin hóa lẽ trực

 Mảy bụi cũng chẳng lưu

 Lấy gì mà ký ức

 Bổn thể vốn hư minh

 Tự nhiên nào nhọc sức.

(Irresolutions are completely done away with, and the right faith is restored to its native straightness; nothing is retained now, nothing is to be memorized. All is void, lucid, and self-illuminating, There is no stain, no exertion, no wasting of energy.

 Trí nào suy lượng được

 Thức nào cân nhắc ra

 Cảnh chơn như pháp giới

 Không người cũng không ta.

(Phi tự lượng xứ, thức tình nan trắc

Chơn như pháp giới, vô tha vô tự).

This is where thinking never attains, this is where the imagination fails to measure. In the higher realm of True Suchness, there is neither ‘other’ nor ‘self.’

 Cần nhứt hãy tương ưng

 Cùng lẽ đạo bất nhị

 Bất nhị thì hòa đồng

 Không gì chẳng bao dong

 Mười phương hàng trí giả

 Đều chung nhập một tông.

(Yêu cấp tương ưng, duy ngôn bất dị

Bất nhị giai đồng, vô bất bao dong

Thập phương trí giả, giai nhập thử tông).

When a direct identification is asked for, we can only say ‘not two.’ In being not two all is the same, all that is comprehended in it: The wise in the ten quarters, they all enter into this absolute faith.

 Tông nầy vốn tự tại

 Khoảnh khắc là vạn niên

 Dầu có không không

 Mười phương trước mắt liền.

(Tông phi xúc diên, nhứt niệm vạn niên

Vô tại bất tại, thập phương mục tiền).

This absolute faith is beyond quickening time and extension space. One instant is ten thousand years; no matter how things are conditioned, whether with ‘to be’ or ‘not to be.’ It is manifest everywhere before you.

 Cực nhỏ là cực lớn

 Đồng nhau bặt cảnh duyên

 Cực lớn là cực nhỏ

 Đồng nhau chẳng giới biên.

(Cực tiểu đồng đại, vong tuyệt cảnh giới

Cực đại đồng tiểu, bất kiến biên biểu).

The infinitely small is as large as large can be, when external conditions are forgotten; the infinitely large is as small as small can be, when objective limits are put out of sight.

 Cái có là cái không

 Cái không là cái có

 Ví chửa được vậy chăng

 Quyết đừng nên nấn ná.

(Hữu tức thị vô, vô tức thị hữu

Nhược bất như thị, tất bất tu thủ).

What is is the same with what is not, what is not is the same with what is: Where this state of things fails to obtain, be sure not to tarry.

 Một tức là tất cả

 Tất cả tức là một

 Quí hồ được vậy thôi

 Lo gì chẳng xong tất.

(Nhứt tức nhứt thiết, nhứt thiết tức nhứt

Đản năng như thị, hà lự bất tất).

One in all, all in one. If only this is realized, no more worry about your not being perfect!

 Tín tâm chẳng phải hai

 Chẳng phải hai tín tâm

 Lời nói làm đạo dứt

 Chẳng kim cổ vị lai.

(Tín tâm bất nhị, bất nhị tín tâm

Ngôn ngữ đạo đoạn, phi cổ lai kim).

The believing mind is not divided, and undivided is the believing mind. This is where words fail, for it is not of the past, future, or present.

Đây là Ba La Mật thứ tư trong lục Ba La Mật—Virya paramita is a gate of Dharma-illumination; for with it, we completely attain all good dharmas, and we teach and guide lazy living beings. This is the fourth of the six paramitas.

According to Zen Master Thích Nhất Hạnh in the explanation of the sutra on the Eight Realizations of the Great Beings, diligence-paramita is one of the most important subjects of meditation in Buddhism. Diligent practice destroys laziness. After we cease looking for joy in desires and passions and know how to feel satisfied with few possessions, we must not be lazy, letting days and months slip by neglectfully. Great patience and diligence are needed continually to develop our concentration and understanding in the endeavor of self-realization. We must whatever time we have to meditate on the four truths of impermanence, suffering, selflessness, and impurity. We must penetrate deeply into the profound meaning of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, practicing, studying, and meditating on the postures and cycles of becoming, maturing, transformation, and destruction of our bodies, as well as our feelings, sensations, mental formations, and consciousness. We should read sutras and other writings which explain cultivation and meditation, correct sitting and controlling the breath, such as The Satipatthana Sutta and The Maha Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra. We have to follow the teachings of these sutras and practice them in an intelligent way, choosing the methods which best apply to our own situation. As necessary, we can modify the methods suggested in order to accommodate our own needs. Our energy must also be regulated until all the basic desires and passions, greed, anger, narrow-mindedness, arrogance, doubt, and preconceived ideas, are uprooted. At this time we will know that our bodies and minds are liberated from the imprisonment of birth and death, the five skandhas, and the three worlds.

Vì thế mà khi thiển kiến bị nhỗ thì tham dục, sân, si, mạn, nghi đều bị nhỗ tận gốc—In Buddhist cultivation, diligent cultivation does not only include meditation, correct sitting and controlling the breath; or that we must not be lazy, letting days and months slip by neglectfully, we should also know how to feel satisfied with few possessions and eventually cease loking for joy in desires and passions completely. Diligent cultivation also means that we must use our time to meditate on the four truths of permanence, suffering, selflessness, and impurity. We must also penetrate deeply into the profound meaning of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness to see that all things as well as our bodies are constantly changing from becoming, to maturing, transformation, and destruction. Diligent cultivation also means to obtain correct understanding and concentration so that we can destroy narrow-mindedness. Among the basic desires and passions, narrow-mindedness has the deepest roots. Thus, when these roots are loosened, all other desires, passions, greed, anger, ignorance, and doubt are also uprooted.

Ngài hưởng thọ 62 tuổi—According to Most Venerable Thích Thiền Tâm in The Thirteen Patriarchs of Pureland Buddhism, Sun-Shang was the Seventh Patriarch of Chinese Pureland Buddhism. His given name was Thứu-Vi, a son of the Nhan family of the Tsien-T’ang Disrict. He lived during the Sung Dynasty. When he turned seven, he encountered a blessed opportunity and left home to join the order. When he was seventeen, he had completed the Bhiksu Precepts. During the Thuần Hòa regin period, he became headmaster of Chiêu-Khánh Temple. Because of his fondness for the past tradition at Mount Lu, he had a statue of the Amitabha Buddha sculpted and gathered fellow Pureland cultivators to form a Lotus Congregation. Thereafter, he pricked blood to use as ink to hand-write the “Pure Conducts” chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra. Ultimately, this was the reason for the change of name from Lotus Congregation to Pure Conducts Congregation. There were a total of 120 superiorly educated and highly influential people who took part in this Buddha Recitation Congregation. Additionally, there were several thousand other virtuous and faithful men and women who called themselves “Pure-Conduct Disciples.” The leader among lay people was the high ranking imperial magistrate, or Prime Minister Wang-Wen-Tan. Specifically as to the Bhiksus, the Great Master taught and guided more than 1,000 monks, all of whom practiced Pureland Buddhism. In December of the fourth year of T’ien-His reign period, as usual, the master sat in the lotus position, engaging in Buddha Recitation. Moments thereafter, he suddenly said aloud: “Amitabha Buddha is here.” He then sat there in a perfect erect position and passed away into Nirvana. He was 62 years old.

(A) Lịch sử Tịnh Độ tông—The history of the Pure Land School: Theo Giáo sư Junjiro Takakusu trong Cương Yếu Triết Học Phật Giáo—According to Prof. Junjiro Takakusu in The Essentials of Buddhist Philosophy:

Con đường dễ dàng và “tha lực” đã được chỉ địnhminh giải trong các bộ nầy: Nagarjuna’s Dasabhumi Sutra and Vasubandhu’s commentary on it are Indian authorities recognized by the Pure Land School. The easy way and the ‘power of another’ are already indicated and elucidated by them.

2) Tại Trung Quốc, những thẩm quyền về tín ngưỡng nầy rất nhiều, nhưng chỉ có bốn dòng truyền thừa sau đây được nhìn nhận—In China the authorities of the faith are many, but only four lines of transmission are generally recognized:

a) Dòng truyền thừa thứ nhất của Phật Đồ Trừng—The first line of transmission of Fu-T’u-Chêng: Phật Đồ Trừng là người Ấn ở Trung Hoa vào khoảng từ 310 đến 348—Fu-T’u-Chêng, an Indian in China between 310 and 348 A.D.

· Đạo An (584-708): T’ao-An (584-708).

· Huệ Viễn: Hui-Yuan.

b) Dòng truyền thừa thứ hai của Bồ Đề Lưu Chi—The second line of transmission of Bodhiruci: Bồ Đề Lưu Chi là người Ấn ở Trung Hoa khoảng 503-535—Bodhiruci, an Indian in China between 503 and 535 A.D.

· Huệ Sủng: Hui-Ch’ung.

· Đạo Tràng: T’ao-Ch’ang.

· Đàm Loan (476-542): T’an-Luan (476-542).

· Đại Hải: T’a-Hai.

· Pháp Thượng (495-580): Fa-Shang (495-580).

c) Dòng truyền thừa thứ ba của Bồ Đề Lưu Chi—The third line of transmission of Bodhiruci.

· Đàm Loan: T’an-Luan.

· Đạo Xước (?-645): T’ao-Ch’o (?-645).

· Thiện Đạo (?-681): Shan-T’ao (?-681).

· Hoài Cảm: Huai-Kan.

· Thiếu Khang: Shao-K’ang.

d) Dòng truyền thừa thứ tư của Từ Mẫn—The fourth line of transmission of Tz’u-Min: Từ Mẫn là người Trung Hoa, sang Ấn trong đời nhà Đường (618-709) và tiếp nhận tín ngưỡng Di Đà tại Kiện Đà La—Tz’u-Min was a Chinese, who went to India during the T’ang Dynasty (618-709 A.D.) and received the Amita-pietism in Gandhara.

Chính Viên Nhân là Tam Tổ là người đã sáng lập nên hai cách thức tụng niệm danh hiệu A Di Đà, đứng và ngồi, và giới thiệu một nhạc điệu lấy Kinh A Di Đà Tiểu Bổn làm khóa tụng hằng ngày: In Japan there are many authorities and the history of the Pure Land School is very long, though Genshin (942-1017) and Honen (1133-1212) are the pre-eminent promoters of the doctrine. Prince Shotoku, in the reign of the Empress Suiko (593-628 A.D.), is said to have believed in Amita. At any rate, a reference to the Western Land of Bliss is found in one of his commentaries. Ein, a Korean monk, lectured in 640 A.D. on the Sutra of the Land of Bliss before the Throne. In the Nara period (710-794 A.D.) Giôgi is said to have traveled about and propagated the faith among the people. Kanjin, a Chinese Vinaya master who came to Nara in 754 A.D., imparted the worship of Amita to his Japanese pupil, Eiei, on the eve of the latter’s death near Kuang-Tung. But in the Nara period the Amita-pietism was not systematically taught, though there must have been some followers who privately adhered to it. In the T’ien-T’ai School the Amita worship was taken up and promoted as an all-inclusive faith. It was Jikaku (Ennin), the third patriarch, who instituted the two forms of repeating the Amita formula, standing and sitting and introduced music relating to the Land of Bliss. Even now adherents read the smaller Sukhavati text in the daily service.

(B) Nghĩa của Tịnh Độ: The meanings of the Pure Land—Tịnh nghĩa là thanh tịnh, tịnh độ là cõi nước không có ô nhiễm, triền phược. Cảnh trí rất là trang nghiêm thanh tịnh, chúng sanh đến cõi nầy chuyên tâm nghe pháp tu tập, chóng thành đạo quả Bồ Đề/Bodhiphala. Chư Phật vô lượng, cõi tịnh cũng vô lượng—Pure Land is a paradise without any defilements. For the sake of saving sentients beings, through innumerable asankhya, all Buddhas cultivated immeasurable good deeds, and established a Pure Land to welcome all beings. Beings in this paradise strive to cultivate to attain Buddhahood.

(C) Những đặc điểm của Tịnh Độ—Some special characteristics of the Pure Land:

A unique aspect of the Pure Land is that while other schools of Mahayana insist on self-enlightenment, Pure Land sects teach sole reliance on the Buddha’s power.

2) Đức Phật của các tông phái Phật giáo khác là Đức Thích Ca Mâu Ni trong khi Đức Phật của các tông phái Tịnh ĐộA Di Đà, hay Vô Lượng Quang, hay Vô Lượng Thọ: The Buddha of all other exoteric schools is Sakyamuni, while the Buddha of Pure Land sects is Amita or Infinite Light (Amitabha), or Infinite Life (Amitayus).

A Di Đà nơi cõi Tây Phương: Followers of other Mahayana Buddhist schools cultivate to seek to become Buddha and abide in Nirvana, while followers of Sukhavati sects cultivate to seek rebirth in the Pure Land, Amitabha’s Bliss Land which is laid in the Western Quarter.

The Buddha’s Pureland is the world where the sentient beings are born through the transformation of lotus flowers. These flowers grow in a lake formed from combinations of seven jewels (gold, silver, lapis, lazuli, crystal, mother-of-pearl, red pearl, and carnelian) or lake of seven jewels—See Thất Bảo (A).

(D) Các cõi Tịnh Độ—Different Pure Lands:

1) Cõi Tây Phương Tịnh Độ chủ trì bởi Đức Phật A Di Đà: Pure Land, Paradise of the West, presided over by Amitabha—Cảnh duyên ở Tây Phương Cực Lạc rất thù thắng, có nhiều sự kiện thuận lợi cho chúng sanh nơi cõi nầy hơn các Tịnh Độ khác, mà tâm lượng của phàm phu trong tam giới không thể thấu hiểu được: The environment and conditions of the Western Pure Land are most exalted. That realm provides sentient beings with many more advantageous circumstances than other Pure Lands, which ordinary beings in the Triple World cannot fully understand.

a) Cảnh nơi Tây Phương Cực Lạc rất ư thù thắng nên có thể khích phát lòng mong mến và quy hướng của loài hữu tình: The environment of the Western Pure Land is exalted, and can awaken the yearning and serve as a focus for sentient beings.

Vì thế cõi đồng cư Tịnh Độ mười phương tuy nhiều, song riêng cõi Cực Lạc có đầy đủ thắng duyên, nên các kinh luận để chỉ quy về đó: The conditions of the Western Pure Land are unfathomable and wonderful and can help those who are reborn to progress easily and swiftly along the path of enlightenment. For these reasons, although there are many common residence Pure Lands in the ten directions, only the Western Pure Land possesses all auspicious conditions in full. This is why sutras and commentaries point toward rebirth in the Western Pure Land.

2) Những Đức Phật khác đều có tịnh độ của các ngài: Other Buddhas have their Pure Lands.

3) Các loại tịnh độ khác như Nhẫn Tịnh Độ, Tinh Tấn Tịnh Độ, Trí Huệ Tịnh Độ, vân vân—There are several other pure lands such as the pure land of patience, zeal, wisdom, etc.

e) Trì GiớiTịnh Độ của Bồ Tát; khi Bồ Tát thành Phật, chúng sanh tu mười điều lành, hạnh nguyện đầy đủ sanh sang nước đó: Discipline (sila) is the Bodhisattva’s pure land, for when he realizes Buddhahood living beings who have kept the ten prohibitions will be reborn there.

Tông nầy chủ trương xóa bỏ đời sống Tăng lữ để lập thành một cộng đồng gồm toàn những tín đồ tại gia—The Jodo-Shin, or Shin sect of Japan, one of the twenty Buddhist sects in Japan. According to the Shin Sect, the recitation of Amitabha Buddha’s name is simply an action of gratitude or an expression of thanksgiving, after one’s realizing the Buddha’s power conferred on one. The Shin School holds the exclusive worship of the Amitabha, not allowing even that of Sakyamuni. This sect has the strict prohibition of prayers in any form on account of personal interests, and the abolition of all disciplinary rules and the priestly or monastic life , thus forming a community of purely lay believers, i.e., householders.

Tịnh Độ Của Chư Bồ Tát: Pure lands of Bodhisattvas—See Tịnh Độ (E).

Tịnh ĐộPháp Môn Khó Nói Khó Tin, Nhưng Lại Dễ Tu Dễ Chứng. Tịnh Độ Là Cửa Pháp Thậm Thâm Giúp Hành Giả Giải Thoát Luân Hồi Và Đi Sâu Vào Phật Tánh Một Cách Từ Từ Nhưng Chắc Chắn: The Pure Land is a dharma-door which is difficult to explain and to believe in, but an easy method to practice and to achieve enlightenment. The Pure Land is the profound Dharma-door which helps practitioners to escape the cycle of births and deaths and to enter deeply into the Buddha-nature, slowly but surely.

Tịnh Độ Nhị Hoành: Hai cách giải thoát trong Tịnh Độ Tông—Two ways of attaining liberation in the Pure Land Sect:

1) Hoành Xuất: Bằng trì trai giữ giớitu hành thiền địnhhành giả được sanh vào cõi hóa độ phương tiện—By discipline to attain to temporary nirvana.

2) Hoành Siêu: Nghe bản nguyện của Đức Phật A Di Đà mà phát tín tâm niệm hồng danh của ngài sẽ được vãng sanh vào cõi báo độ chân thực—Happy salvation to Amitabha’s paradise through trust in him.

Eventually, at Linh Nham Congregation, the Great Venerable Master Yin-Kuang had a convention for Pureland Cultivators, both lay people and clergy, to promote Great Venerable Sinh-So as the Tenth Patriarch, Great Venerable Master Sua-Sen as the Eleventh Patriarch, and Great Venerable Master Che-Wu as the Twelfth Patriarch. After the Great Venerable Master Yin-Kuang gained rebirth in the Pureland, Pureland cultivators carefully examined his life and made the following observations: His conduct and practice were pure and adorning. He made significant contributions to the Pureland Buddhism. Thus, after their meeting, they honored him as the Thirteenth Patriarch. According to the tradition of Pureland Buddhism, the Great Venerable Masters followed the path of compassion, wisdom, and benefitting others; therefore, they never proclaimed themselves as Patriarchs. Only after they passed away, leaving behind significant and extraordinary artifacts, such as caris, upon death they were received by Buddha, Maha-Bodhisattvas, etc, or having outward characteristics of gaining rebirth, did future generations, relying on these evidences, bestowed upon them as Patriarchs. The Biographies of Pure Land Sages is a collection of real life stories of Pureland cultivators, lay and ordained Buddhists, who gained rebirth to provide concrete evidence and serve as testimony to the true teachings of the Buddha and Pureland Patriarchs for those who may still have doubts and skepticism. Almost all the virtuous beings recorded in the Biographies of Pureland Sages relied on the dharma door of Buddha Recitation to gain rebirth and earn a place in one of the nine levels of Golden Lotus in the Western Pureland. The Pureland text, “The Road to the Ultimate Bliss World” was first translated into Vietnamese by the Most Venerable Thích Trí Tịnh, and, later, it was translated and explained again by the late Great Dharma Master Thích Thiền Tâm with the title “Collection of Lotus Stories.”

Tịnh Độ Tông: Sukhavati sect.

(A) Tịnh Độ tông Trung Quốc—Chinese Pure Land Buddhism:

(A) Nguồn gốc và lịch sử của Tịnh Độ Tông—The origin of the Pure Land Sect:

1) Tịnh Độ vốn dịch nghĩa từ chữ Phạn “Sukhavati” có nghĩa là Cực Lạc Quốc Độ—Pure Land is a translation of a sanskrit word “Shukavati” which means Land of Bliss.

Sau đó, vào thế kỷ thứ 7, ngài Đàm Loan dưới thời nhà Đường chính thức thành lập Tịnh Độ Tông—The Pure Land sect, whose chief tenet is salvation by faith in Amitabha (Liên Hoa Tông in Japan—The Lotus sect). Those who believe in Amitabha Buddha and continuously recite his name will be born in the Pure Land to become a Buddha. In China and Japan, it is also called the Lotus sect, established by Hui-Yuan of the Chin dynasty (317-419), it claims P’u-Hsien (Samantabhadra) as founder. Later, Tan-Lan officially founded the Pure Land (Sukhavativyuha) in the seventh century A.D. under the reign of the T’ang dynasty.

(B) Triết lý của Tịnh Độ tông—The philosophy of the Pure Land:

Họ đặt nặng việc khấn nguyện hồng danh Đức Phật A Di Đà, xem đây là việc quan trọng của một tín đồ, nhằm tỏ lòng biết ơn đối với Đức Phật cứu độ—According to the doctrine of the Pure Land, the Western Heaven is the residence of the Amitabha Buddha. This sect bases its belief on the formula that salvation is to be attained “through absolute faith in another’s power,” and lays emphasis on the recitation of the name of Amitabha Buddha, or Namo Amitabha Buddha, which is regarded as a meritorious act on the part of the believer. The recitation of the Buddha’s name is looked upon as the expression of a grateful heart.

Tín ngưỡng Di Đà sẽ là tối thượng thừa trong các thừa để cho tất cả những ai cần đến—Nagarjuna’s Dasabhumi Sutra and Vasubandhu’s commentary on it are the Indian authorities recognized by the Pure Land School because the “easy way” and “power of another” are indicated and elucidated by them. Nagarjuna asserted that there were two ways for entering Buddhahood, one difficult (other sects) and one easy (the Pure Land sect). One was traveling on foot and the other was passage by boat. Amitabha-pietism will be the greatest of all vehicles to convey those who are in need of such means.

But King Milinda (a Greek ruler in Sagara, about 115 B.C.) questioned a learned priest Nagasena, saying that it was unreasonable that a man of bad conduct could be saved if he believed in a Buddha on the eve of his death. Nagasena replied: “A stone, however small, will sink into the water, but even a stone weighing hundreds of tons if put on a ship will float.”

Quốc độ của Ngài ở Tây phương thường được gọi là Tây Phương Tịnh Độ—While all other schools of Mahayana insist on self-enlightenment, Pure Land Sects teach sole reliance on the Buddha’s power. The Buddha of all other exoteric schools is Sakyamuni while the Buddha of the Pure Land Sects is Amita, or Infinite Light (Amitabha), or Infinite Life (Amitayus) whose Land is laid in the Western Quarter, often designated as the Western Pure Land.

The Amitabha or Amitayus is a Buddha idealized from the historical Buddha Sakyamuni. According to Prof. Takakusu in The Essentials of Buddhist Philosophy, if the Buddha is purely idealized, he will be simply the Infinite in principle. The infinite will then be identical with Thusness. The Infinite, if depicted in reference to space, will be the Infinite Light; and if depicted in reference to time, will be the Infinite Life. This is Dharma-kaya or ideal. This dharma-kaya is the sambhoga-kaya or the Reward-body or body of enjoyment if the Buddha is viewed as a Buddha ‘coming down to the world.’ If he is viewed as a Bodhisattva going up to the Buddhahood, he is a would-be Buddha like the toiling Bodhisattva (Sakyamuni). It is Sakyamuni himself who describes in the Shukavati-vyuha the activities of the would-be Buddha, Dharmakara, as if it had been his former existence. The vow, original to the would-be Buddha or even to Sakyamuni Buddha himself, is fully expressed in forty-eight vows in the text.

6) Triết lý của Tịnh Độ tông căn cứ vào những lời nguyện quan trọng của Phật A Di Đà—The philosophy of the Pure Land is based on Amitabha’s most important vows:

“If he cannot get such aspects of Infinite Light and Life, he will not be a Buddha.”If he becomes a Buddha he can constitute a Buddha Land as he likes. A Buddha, of course, lives in the “Nirvana of No Abode,” and hence he can live anywhere and everywhere. His vow is to establish the Land of Bliss for the sake of all beings. An ideal land with adornments, ideal plants, ideal lakes or what not is all for receiving pious aspirants.

b) Nguyện thứ 18 được xem là quan trọng nhất, hứa cho những ai y chỉ hoàn toàn nơi Phật lực với trọn tấm lòng thanh tịnhchuyên niệm trì Phật hiệu, sẽ được thác sinh vào cõi Cực Lạc nầy—The eighteenth vow which is regarded as most important, promises a birth in his Land of Bliss to those who have a perfect reliance on the Buddha, believing with serene heart and repeating the Buddha’s name.

c) Nguyện thứ 19, nguyện tiếp dẫn trước giờ lâm chung những ai có nhiều công đức—The nineteenth vow promises a welcome by the Buddha himself on the eve of death to those who perform meritorious deeds.

d) Nguyện thứ 20 nói rằng ai chuyên niệm danh hiệu Ngài với ý nguyện thác sanh vào nơi quốc độ của Ngài thì sẽ được như ý—The twentieth vow further indicates that anyone who repeats his name with the object of winning a birth in his Land will also be received.

(C) Kinh điển chính của Tịnh Độ Tông—The Pure Land’s main texts: Kinh A Di Đà hay Tiểu Bản Shukavati-vyuha là một bản toát yếu hay trích yếu của Đại Phẩm Shukavati-vyuha hay Đại Vô Lượng Thọ Kinh. Bộ chót trong số ba kinh, Quán Vô Lượng Thọ Kinh cho chúng ta biết nguyên lai của giáo lý Tịnh Độ do Đức Phật Thích Ca Mâu Ni thuyết. A Xà Thế, thái tử thành Vương Xá, nổi loạn chống lại vua cha là vua Bình Sa Vươnghạ ngục nhà vua nầy. Thuyết giáo nầy, ta gọi đấy là Kinh A Di Đà.” Như vậy, giáo thuyết của Đức Phật Thích Ca Mâu Ni cuối cùng cũng không khác với của Đức Phật A Di Đà chút nào—The smaller text of Shukavati-vyuha is a resume or abridged text of the larger one. The last of the three texts, the Amitayus-dhyana Sutra, tells us the origin of the Pure Land doctrine taught by the Buddha Sakyamuni. Ajatasatru, the prince heir-apparent of Rajagriha, revolted against his father, King Bimbisara, and imprisoned him. His consort, Vaidehi, too was confined to a room. Thereupon the Queen asked the Buddha to show her a better place where no such calamities could be encountered. The World-Honoured One appeared before her and showed all the Buddha lands and she chose the Land of Amita as the best of all. The Buddha then taught her how to meditate upon it and finally to be admitted there. He instructed her by his own way of teaching and at the same time by the special teaching of Amita. That both teachings were one in the end could be seen from th words he spoke to Ananda at the conclusion of his sermons. “Oh Ananda! Remember this sermon and rehearse it to the assembly on the Vulture Peak. By this sermon, I mean the name of Amitabha.” From this we can infer that the object of the sermon was the adoration of Amita. Thus, we see that Sakyamuni’s teaching was after all not different from that of Amitabha.

Tông Yuzunenbutsu do Ryonin (1072-1132) sáng lập và tông Ji do Ippen (1239-1289) sáng lập: The Jodo sect was founded in 1175 by Genku. He is better known as Honen. His doctrine was based largely upon that of Shan-Tao (613-681), one of the most famous teachers of the Amitabha school in China. Later, Shinran established the Jodo-Shin sect with several important reforms in the Jodo sect. The Yuzunenbutsu was founded by Ryonin (1072-1132) and the Ji sect by Ippen (1239-1289).

(B) Triết lý Tịnh Độ tông Nhật Bản—The philosophy of the Pure Land Buddhism in Japan:

Các giáo lý của Honen được đông đảo quần chúng yêu thích và tông phái Jodo nhờ đó mà trở thành một trong những tông pháiảnh hưởng mạnh nhất tại Nhật Bản: Genku selected the Sukhavativyuha-sutra, both the larger and the smaller editions, and the Amitayurdhyana-sutra as canonical texts, teaching the benefits of faith in the Amitabha Buddha. His principal belief was that the Amitabha who had willed that every one should, after death, be born in his paradise called Sukhavati. Hence it was by believing in Amitabha that one could, at the end of life, gain access to the pure land of one’ desire. The system, being a simple one, is suited to the common people. Nenbutsu or the recitation of the name of Amitabha Buddha is a natural practice among the followers of this faith, but the emphasis is on the belief rather than on practical recitation. Nonetheless, Nenbutsu should not be considered to be of secondary importance. It is held that even those who are too preoccupied with their work to go deeply into the doctrines of Buddhism will be born in the heaven of Amitabha if they have implicit faith in his name. Honen’s teachings found great favour among the masses and the Jodo thus became one of the most influential in Japan.

Sự tự do tôn giáo mà các tín đồ học được nơi ông đã thúc đẩy họ tìm kiếm sự tự do về xã hội và chính trị: According to Shinran, all living beings shall be saved on account of the vow taken by Amitabha Buddha. Hence, the recitation of the name of the Buddha, as also other practices in ordinary life, is but the expression of a grateful heart. Shinran introduced several important reforms in the organization of the temple, the object of which was to remove the division between the clergy and the laity. He did not recognize any difference between the two occupations. All human beings are equally capable of being reborn in the pure land of the Buddha. “There were to be no masters or disciples. All were to be friends and brothers before the Buddha.” Shinran, as others belonging to this sect, led an ordinary life among people and considered himself not a preceptor, but merely a follower of Amitabha’s way. Because of Shinran’s liberal outlook, the Jodo-Shin rapidly became popular among the people, especially among the farmers and the peasants. The religious freedom which his followers learned from him impelled them to seek political and social freedom.
