Một cách vắn tắt có bảy loại không—In The Lankavatara Sutra, the Buddha reminded Mahamati about ‘Emptiness’ as thus: “Listen, Mahamati, to what I tell you. The idea of Sunyata belongs to the domain of imaginative contrivance, and as people are apt to cling to the terminology of this domain, we have the doctrines of Sunyata, Anutpada, Advaya, and Nihsvabhava, i.e., with the view of freeing from the clinging.” Briefly, there are seven kinds of Emptiness.

Existence is characterized by mutual dependence; individuality and generality are empty when one is regarded apart from the other; when things are analyzed to the last degree, they are to be comprehended as not existent; there are, after all, no aspects of individuation such as “this,” “that,” or “both;” there are no ultimate irreducible marks of differentiation. For this reason, it is said that self-appearance is empty. By this is meant that appearance is not a final fact.

It is because there is no birth of self-substance by itself. That is to say, individualization is the construction of our own mind; to think that there are in reality individual objects as such, is an illusion; they have no self-substance, therefore, they are said to be empty.

It means that harboured in all the Skandhas there is, from the first, Nirvana which betrays no sign of activity. That is, their activities as perceived by our senses are not real, they are in their nature quiet and not doing. Therefore, we speak of non-acting of the Skandhas, which is characterized as emptiness.

Vì lý do ấy nên có cái mà ta nêu định là Không về Hành—What is meant by the Emptiness of Action? It means that the Skandhas are free of selfhood and all that belongs to selfhood, and that whatever activities are manifested by them are due to the combination of causes and conditions. That is, they are not by themselves independent creating agencies, they have nothing which they can claim as belonging to their “self,” and their karmic activities are generated by the conjunction of many causes or accidents. For which reason there is what we designate the Emptiness of Action.

5) Nhất thiết pháp bất khả thuyết không (cái Không với ý nghĩa là không thể gọi tên của Hiện Hữu): Sarvadharma (skt)—Emptiness by which is meant the Unnamability of Existence—Cái không về sự bất khả thuyết của tất cả các sự vật nghĩa là gì? Vì sự hiện hữu nầy phụ thuộc vào sáng kiến tưởng tượng hay biến kế sở chấp của chúng ta nên không có tự tính nào trong nó có thể được gọi tên và được miêu tả bởi cú pháp của trí tương đối của chúng ta—What is meant by the Emptiness of the Unnamability (có thể được gọi tên) of All Things? As this existence is dependent upon our imaginative contrivance, there is no self-substance in it which can be named and described by the phraseology of our relative knowledge. This unnamability is designated here as a form of emptiness.

6) Đệ nhất nghĩa đế Không (cái không của cấp độ tối thượng, nghĩa là thực tính tối hậu hay Thánh trí): Paramartra (skt)—Emptiness of the highest degree by which is meant Ultimate Reality or Supreme Wisdom—Cái không về thực tính tối hậu nghĩa là gì? Khi trí tuệ tối thượng được thể chứng trong tâm thức nội tại của chúng ta, bấy giờ chúng ta sẽ thấy rằng tất cả mọi lý thuyết, ý niệm sai lầm, và tất cả những dấu vết của tập khí từ vô thỉ đều bị tẩy sạch và hoàn toàn trống không—What is meant by Great Emptiness of Ultimate Reality, which is Supreme Wisdom. When the supreme wisdom is realized in our inner consciousness, it will then be found that all the theories, wrong ideas, and all the traces of beginningless memory are altogether wiped out and perfectly empty. This is another form of emptiness.

Sự thiếu vắng ấy được gọi là cái không hỗ tương—What is meant by Emptiness of Reciprocity? When whatever quality possessed by one thing is lacking in another, this absence is designated as emptiness. For instance, in the house of Srigalamatri there are no elephants, no cattle, no sheep, etc., and I call this house empty. This does not mean that there are no Bhiksus here. The Bhiksus are Bhiksus, the house is the house, each retaining its own characteristics. As to elephants, horses, cattle, etc., they will be found where they properly belong, only they are absent in a place which is properly occupied by somebody else. In this manner, each object has its special features by which it is distinguished from another, as they are not found in the latter. This absence is called Emptiness of Reciprocity.

Ông A Nan! Ông A Nan! Ông A Nan! Ví như nước thành băng, rồi băng trở lại thành nước, không ngừng nghỉ vậy.”—In the Surangama Sutra, book Three, Ananda said to the Buddha, “World Honored One, the Thus Come One has often spoken of the mixture and union of causes and conditions, saying that the transformations of everything in the world are created from the mixing and uniting of the four elements. Why does the Thus Come One reject causes and conditions and spontaneity as well? I do not know how to understand your meaning now. Please be so compassionate as to instruct us living beings in the final meaning of the Middle Way, in the Dharmas which are not idle theories.” The Buddha then taught Ananda about the Seven Great Elements as follows: “Ananda! You have renounced the small vehicle dharmas of the sound-hearers and those enlightened to conditions and have resolved to diligently seek unsurpassed Bodhi. Because of that, I will now explain the foremost truth to you. Why do you still bind yourself up in the idle theories and false thoughts current among people of the world. Although you are very learned, you are like someone who can discuss medicines but cannot distinguish a real medicine when it is placed before you. The Thus Come One says that you are truly pitiful. Listen attentively now as I explain this point in detail for you and also for those of the future who cultivate the Great Vehicle, so that you all can penetrate to the real appearance.Ananda! According to what you said, the mixing and uniting of the four elements create the myriad transformations of everything in the world. Ananda! If the nature of those elements does not mix and unite in substance, then they cannot combine with other elements, just as empty space cannot combine with forms. Assuming that they do not mix and unite, they are then only in a process of transformation in which they depend on one another for existence from beginning to end. In the course of tranformation they are produced and extinguished, being born and then dying, dying and then being born, in birth after birth, in death after death, the way a torch spun in a circle forms an unbroken wheel of flame. Ananda! The process is like water becoming ice and ice becoming water again.”

1) Địa Đại (Đất): The Element Earth.

Consider the nature of earth; its coarse particles make up the great earth, its fine particles make up motes of dust, down to and including motes of dust bordering upon emptiness.

· Ông A Nan! If one divides those fine motes of dust, their appearance is at the boundaries of form. Then divide those into seven parts. Ananda! If mote of dust bordering upon emptiness is divided and becomes emptiness, it should be that emptiness can give rise to form. Just now you asked if mixing and uniting doesn’t bring about the transformations of everything in the world. You should carefully consider how much emptiness mixes and unites to make a single mote of dust bordering upon emptiness, since it makes no sense to say that dust bordering on emptiness is composed of dust bordering on emptiness. Moreover, since motes of dust bordering upon emptiness can be reduced to emptiness, of how many motes of such form as this must emptiness be composed?

Sắc còn có thể chẻ ra, chứ làm sao mà hợp không cho được?: When these motes of form mass together, a mass of form does not make emptiness; when emptiness is massed together, a mass of emptiness does not make form. Besides, although form can be divided, how can emptiness be massed together?

Đều là do thức tâm phân biệt đo lường, tính toán, chỉ có lời nói chứ không có thực nghĩa: You simply do not know that in the treasury of the Thus Come One, the nature of form is true emptiness, and the nature of emptiness is true form. Pure at its origin, it pervades the dharma realm. It accords with living beings’ minds, in response to their capacity to know. It is experienced to whatever extent is dictated by the law of karma. Ignorant of this fact, people in the world are so deluded as to assign its origin to causes and conditions or to spontaneity. These mistakes, which arise from the discriminations and reasoning processes of the conscious mind, are nothing but the play of empty words which have no real meaning.

2) Hỏa Đại (Lửa): The Element Fire—Ông A Nan! Fire, which has no nature of its own, depends upon various causes and conditions for its existence. Consider a family in the city that has not yet eaten. When they wish to prepare food, they hold up a speculum to the sun, seeking fire.

a) Ông A Nan! Ông A Nan! Let us look into your suggestion that the fire comes forth from mixing and uniting. By way of example, you and I and the twelve hundred fifty Bhiksus unite together to form a community. However, a careful analysis of the community reveals that every member composing it has his own body, birthplace, clan, and name. . For instance, Sariputra is a Brahman, Uruvilva is of the Kasyapa clan, and, Ananda, come from the Gautama family. Ananda! Suppose fire existed because of mixing and uniting. When the hand holds up the speculum to the sun to seek fire, does the fire come out of the speculum? Does it come out of the moxa tinder? Or does it come from the sun?

· Ông A Nan! Nếu từ mặt trời tới, lửa đó đã đốt được bùi nhùi, đáng lẽ cũng đốt được các rừng cây mà nó qua: Suppose, Ananda, that it came from the sun. Not only would it burn the moxa tinder in your hand, but as it came across the groves of trees, it should burn them up as well.

· Nếu từ trong gương mà ra, lửa đó đã từ gương ra đốt cháy bùi nhùi, gương kia sao không cháy, tay cầm gương cũng không thấy nóng: Suppose that it came from the speculum. Since it came out from within the speculum to ignite the moxa tinder, why doesn’t the speculum melt? Yet your hand that holds it feels no heat; how, then, could the speculum melt?

· Nếu sinh từ bùi nhùi, cần chi phải có ánh sáng mặt trời và gương tiếp nhau, mới có sinh lửa: Suppose that the fire came from the moxa tinder. Then why is fire generated only when the bright mirror comes into contact with the dazzling light?

b) Ông A Nan! Ông nên xét kỹ, gương do tay cầm, mặt trời từ trên trời chiếu đến, bùi nhùi do đất sinh, vậy lửa từ đâu tới? Mặt trời và gương xa nhau, không phải hòa hợp, không lẽ ngọn lửa không do đâu mà tự có: Furthermore, Ananda, on closer examination, you will find the speculum held in hands, the sun high up in the sky, and moxa tinder grown from the ground. Where does the fire come from? How can it travel some distance to reach here? The sun and the speculum cannot mix and unite, since they are far apart from each other. Nor can it be that the fire exists spontaneously, without an origin.

Ông A Nan! Ông nên biết người ta cầm gương một nơi, thì một nơi có lửa, khắp pháp giới cầm gương, thì khắp thế gian nổi lửa, nổi khắp thế gian, đâu có nhứt định chỗ nào, chỉ theo nghiệp mà phát hiện: You simply do not know that in the treasury of the Thus Come One, he nature of fire is true emptiness, and the nature of emptiness is true fire. Pure at its origin, it pervades the dharma realm. It accords with living beings’ minds, in response to their capacity to know. Ananda! You should know that fire is generated in the place where a speculum is held up to the sunlight, and fire will be generated everywhere if specula are held up to the sunlight throughout the dharma realm. Since fire can come forth throughout the whole world, can there be any fixed place to which it is confined? It is experienced to whatever extentis dictated by the law of karma

Đều là do thức tâm phân biệt, đo lường, tính toán, chỉ có lời nói đều không thật nghĩa: People in the world, ignorant of this fact, are so deluded as to assign its origin to causes and conditions or spontaneity. These mistakes, which arise from the discriminations and reasoning processes of the conscious mind, are nothing but the play of empty words which have no real meaning.

3) Thủy Đại (Nước): The Element Water.

a) Ông A Nan! Water is by nature unstable. It may keep on flowing or come to a stop. Kapila, Chakra, Padma, and Hasta, and other great magicians of Sravasti often hold up instruments to the light of the full moon at midnight to extract from the moon the essence of water to mix with their drugs. Does the water come out of the crystal ball? Does it exist of itself in space? Or, does it come from the moon?

· Ông A Nan! Suppose the water came from the distant moon. Water then should also flow from all the grass and trees when the moonlight passes over them on its way to the crystal ball. If it does flow from them, why wait for it to come out of the crystal ball? If it does not flow from the trees, then it is clear that the water does not descend from the moon.

· Nếu từ ngọc ra, lẽ ra ngọc thường chảy nước, sao phải đợi nửa đêm hứng với ánh trăng sáng tỏ: If it came from the crystal balls, then it should flow from the crystal all the time. Why would they have to wait for mindnight and the light of the full moon to receive it?

· Nếu từ hư không sinh, tính hư không không có bờ bến, đáng lẽ nước cũng chảy không có giới hạn, khắp cõi người cõi Trời thảy đều chìm ngập, sao còn có thủy, lục, không, đi lại mỗi thứ khác nhau: If it came from space, which is by nature boundless, it would flow everywhere, until everything between earth and sky was submerged. How, then, could there still be travel by water, land, and space?

b) Ông hãy xét kỹ, mặt trăng trên trời cao, ngọc do tay cầm, mâm hứng nước do người bưng để, vậy nước từ đâu chảy tới? Mặt trăng và ngọc xa nhau, không phải hòa, không phải hợp, chẳng lẽ nước không do đâu mà có: Furthermore, upon closer examination you will find that the moon moves through the sky, the crystal ball is held in by the hand, and the pan for receiving the water is put there by someone; but, where does the water that flows into the pan come from? The moon and the crystal balls cannot mix or unite, since they are far apart. Nor can it be that the essence of water exists spontaneously without an origin.

Sinh khắp thế gian, đâu có nhứt định chỗ nào, chỉ theo nghiệp mà phát hiện: You still do not know that in the treasury of the Thus Come One the nature of water is true empty, and the nature of emptiness is true water. Pure in its origin, it pervades the dharma realm. It accords with living beings’ minds, in response to their capacity to know. A crystal ball is held up at a certain place, and there water comes forth. If crystal balls were held up throughout the dharma realm, then throughout the dharma realm, water would come forth. Since water can come forth throughout the entire world, can there be any fixed place which it is confined? It is experienced to whatever extent is dictated by the law of karma.

d) Thế gian không biết, lầm cho là nhân duyên và tính tự nhiên, đều là do thức tâm phân biệt, đo lường, tính toán, chỉ có lời nói chứ không có thật nghĩa: People in the world, ignorant of this fact, are so deluded as to assign their origin to causes and conditions or to spontaneity. These mistakes, which arise from the discriminations and reasoning processes of the conscious mind, are nothing but the play of empty words which have no real meaning.

4) Phong Đại (Gió): The Element Wind.

a) Ông A Nan! By nature, the wind has no substance, and its movements and stillness are erratic. You always adjust your robe as you enter the great assembly. When the corner of your ‘samghati’ brushes the person next to you, there is a slight breeze which stirs against that person’s face. Does this wind come from the corner of the Kashaya, does it arise from emptiness, or is it produced from the face of the person brushed by the wind?

· Ông A Nan! If the wind comes from the corner of the ‘kashaya,’ you are then clad in the wind, and your kashaya should fly about and leave your body. I am now speaking Dharma in the midst of the assembly, and my robe remains motionless and hangs straight down. You should look closely at my robe to see whether there is any wind in it. It can not be that the wind is stored somewhere in the robe, either.

Đã gọi là hư không, sao còn có gió ở đó ra?: If it arose from emptiness, why wouldn’t the wind brush against the man even when your robe did not move? Emptiness is constant in nature; thus, the wind should constantly arise. When there was no wind, the emptiness should disappear. You can perceive the disappearance of the wind; but, what would the disappearance of emptiness look like? If it did arise and disappear, it could not be what is called emptiness. Since it is what is called emptiness, how can it generate wind?

Sao ông tự xốc áo mà gió trở lại phất mặt người kia?: If the wind came from the face of the person by your side, it would blow upon you while you set your robe in order. Why would it blow backwards upon the person from whom it was generated?

Chẳng lẽ gió kia không từ đâu mà tự có?: Upon closer examination, you will find that the robe is set in order by yourself, the face blown by the wind belongs to the person by your side, and the emptiness is tranquil and not involved in movement. Where, then, does the wind come from that blows in this place? The wind and emptiness cannot mix and unite, since they are different from each other. Nor should it be that the wind spontaneously exists without an origin.

You still do not know that in the treasury of the Thus Come One the nature of wind is true emptiness, and the nature of emptiness is true wind. Pure at its origin, it pervades the dharma realm. It accords with living beings’s minds, in response to their capacity to know.

· Ông A Nan! In the same way that you, as one person, move your robe slightly, and a small wind arises, so a wind arises in all countries if there is a similar movement throughout the dharma realm. Since it can be produced throughout the world, how can there be any fixed place to which it is confined? It is experienced to whatever extent is dictated by the law of karma.

· Thế gian không biết, lầm cho là nhân duyên và tính tự nhiên, đều do tâm thức phân biệt, đo lường, tính toán, chỉ có lời nói, chứ không có thật nghĩa: People in the world, ignorant of this fact, are so deluded as to assign their origin to causes and conditions or to spontaneity. These mistakes, which arise from the discriminations and reasoning processes of the conscious mind, are nothing but the play of empty words which bear no real meaning.

5) Không Đại (Hư không): Akasa (skt)—The Element Space.

a) Ông A Nan! The nature of emptiness has no shape; it is only apparent because of form. For instance, Sravasti is far from the river, so when the Sratriyas, Brahmans, Vaishyas, Sudras, Bharadvajas, Chandalas, and so forth, build their homes there, they dig wells seeking water. Where a foot of earth is removed, there is a foot of emptiness; where as many as ten feet of earth are removed, there are ten feet of emptiness. The depth of the emptiness corresponds to the amount of earth removed. Does this emptiness come out of the dirt, does it exist because of the digging, or does it arise of itself without a cause?

· Ông A Nan! Nếu hư không không do nhân gì sinh mà tự sinh ra, thì trước khi đào đất, sao chỗ đó không vô ngại, chỉ thấy đất liền, không chút thông suốt: Moreover, Ananda, suppose this emptiness arose of itself without any cause. Why wasn’t it unobstructed before the earth was dug? Quite the contrary, one saw only the great earth; there was no emptiness evident in it.

Nếu không ra vào, thì hư không với đất, vốn không có nhân gì khác nhau, không khác tức là đồng, thì khi đất ra, sao hư không không ra?: If emptiness came about because of the removal of the earth, we should have seen it entering the well as the earth was removed. If emptiness was not seen entering the well when the earth was first removed, how can we say that emptiness came about bcause of the removal of the earth? If there is no going in or coming out, then there is no difference between the earth and emptiness. Why, then, doesn’t emptiness come out of the well along with the earth in the process of digging?

Nếu không nhân đào mà ra, thì đào đất, sao lại thấy hư không?: If emptiness appeared because of the digging, then the digging would bring out emptiness instead of the earth. If emptiness does not come out because of the digging, then the digging yields only earth. Why, then, do we see emptiness appear as the well is dug?

b) Ông nên suy xét kỹ, đào là tự tay người, tùy cách vận chuyển, đất nhân dưới đất dời lên, còn hư không nhân đâu mà ra?: You should consider this event more carefully. Look into it deeply, and you will find that the digging comes from the person’s hand as it means of conveyance, and the earth exists because of a change in the ground. But what cause the emptiness to appear?

Chẳng lẽ hư không không từ đâu mà ra?: The digging and the emptiness, one being substantial and the other insubstantial, do not function on the same plane. They do not mix and unite. Nor can it be that emptiness exists spontaneously without an origin.

· Tính của hư không đầy đủ, cùng khắp, vốn không lay động, nên biết hư không với địa, thủy, hỏa, phong hiện tiền đều gọi là ngũ đại, tính chân viên dung, đều là Như Lai tạng, vốn không sinh diệt: The nature of emptiness is completely pervasive, it is basically unmoving. You should know that emptiness and earth, water, fire, and wind are together called the five elements. Their natures are true and perfectly fused, and all are the treasury of the Thus Come One, fundamentally devoid of production and extinction. Ông A Nan! Your mind is murky and confused, and you do not awaken to the fact that the source of the four elements is none other than the treasury of the Thus Come One. Why do you not take a look at emptiness to see whether it is subject to such relativities as coming and going?

· Ông không biết trong Như Lai Tạng, tính giácchân không, tính khôngchân giác, bản nhiên thanh tịnh, cùng khắp pháp giới, theo tâm chúng sanh, tùy trình độ cao thấp: Do you know at all that in the treasury of the Thus Come One the nature of enlightenment is true emptiness, and the nature of emptiness is true enlightenment. Pure at its origin, it pervades the dharma realm. It accords with living beings’ minds, in response to their capacity to know.

· Ông A Nan! If in one place there is a well empty of earth, there will be emptiness filling up that one place. If there are wells empty of earth in the ten directions, there will be emptiness filling them up in the ten directions. Since it fills up the ten directions, is there any fixed location in which emptiness is found? It is experienced to whatever extent is dictated by the law of karma.

Đều là thức tâm phân biệt, đo lường, tính toán, chỉ có lời nói, đều không thật nghĩa: People in the world, ignorant of this fact, are deluded as to assign their origin to causes and conditions or to spontaneity. These mistakes, which arise from the discriminations and reasoning processes of the conscious mind, are nothing but the play of empty words which bear no real meaning.

6) Kiến Đại: Reasoning to make the seven elements (sometimes it is also named as Tâm Đại or Mind).

a) Ông A Nan! Seeing-awareness does not perceive by itself. It depends upon form and emptiness for its existence. You are now in the Jeta Grove where you see brightness in the morning and darkness in the evening. Deep in the night you will see brightness when the moon arises and darkness when no moon is visible. The brightness and darkness are discerned by the seeing. Is the seeing identical in substance with brightness, darkness, and emptiness, or are they not the same substance? Are they the same and yet different, or are they not the same and yet not different?

· Ông A Nan! Suppose seeing were one with brightness, darkness, and emptiness. It so happens that where there is darkness there is no brightness, and where there is brightness there is no darkness, because the two cancel each other out. If it were one with brightness, it would cease to exist in darkness. Such being the case, how could it perceive both brightness and darkness.

· Nếu sáng tối khác nhau, còn cái thấy không sinh diệt, thì lý đồng một không thành: If brightness and darkness differ from each other, how can they form a unity with seeing, which transcends production and destruction.

· Nếu không đồng, ông hãy thử rời các cái sáng, tối, hư không, riêng chỉ cái thấy là hình tướng gì?: Suppose that the essence of seeing were not of one substance with brightness and darkness, and that you were separate from light, darkness, and emptiness. Then what shape and appearance would the source of the seeing have, as you distinguish it?

Thấy sáng, thấy tối, tính không dời đổi, sao gọi là không khác?: In the absence of darkness, brightness, and emptiness, the seeing would be the same as hair on a turtle or horns on a hare. How could we establish the seeing-perception without the presence of the three qualities of brightness, darkness, and emptiness? How could we say that the seeing was one with darkness and brightness, since brightness and darkness are opposite? Yet, how can we say that it was different from the three qualities mentioned, since in their absence the seeing-perceptioncan never be established. How could we say that the seeing was not one with emptiness, since no boundary is established between them when they are separated from each other? How could we say that they were not different, since the seeing always remains unchanged, regardless of whether it is perceiving brightness or perceiving darkness.

c) Ông hãy xét kỹ, suy đi xét lại, sáng do mặt trời, tối từ đêm không trăng, thông suốt thuộc hư không, ngăn ngại thuộc đất, còn cái thấy do đâu có?: You should examine this even greater detail, investigate it minutely, consider and contemplate it carefully. The light comes from the sun and darkness from the absence of the moon; penetration belongs to emptiness, and solidity returns to the earth. From what does the essence of seeing arise?

d) Cái thấy có biết, cái thấy chẳng biết, không phải hòa, chẳng phải hợp, không lẽ cái thấy không theo đâu tự phát ra: Seeing has awareness, and emptiness is inanimate; they do not mix and unite. Nor can it be that the essence of seeing arise spontaneously without an origin.

e) Nếu cái thấy, nghe, hay biết, tính viên dung cùng khắp, vốn không lay động, nên biết cái thấy cùng hư không vô biên, bất động và địa, thủy, hỏa, phong, bốn thứ lay động đều gọi là sáu đại, tính chân viên dung, đều là Như Lai Tạng, vốn không sinh diệt: If the faculties of seeing, hearing, and knowing are by nature all pervasive and unmoving, you should know that the stable, boundless emptiness, together with the unstable elements such as earth, water, fire, and wind, are together known as the six elements. They are , in nature, true and perfectly fused and thus are the treasury of the Thus Come One, fundamentally devoid of production and destruction.

f) Ông A Nan! Your nature is so submerged that you have not realized that your seeing, hearing, awareness, and knowing are basically the treasury of the Thus Come One. You should contemplate seeing, hearing, awareness, and knowing to see whether they are subject to production and extinction; whether they are identical or different; whether they are not subject to production and extinction; and whether they are not identical and not different. You still don’t know that in the treasury of the Thus Come One the nature of seeing is enlightened brightness; the essence of enlightenment is bright seeing. Pure at its origin, it pervades the dharma realm. It accords with living beings’ minds in response to their capacity to know.

· Như Lai ở kiến căn, cái thấy cùng khắp pháp giới, các cái nghe, ngửi, nếm, sờ, biết, diệu đức sáng suốt, cùng khắp pháp giới, đầy khắp hư không mười phương, đâu có nhứt định chỗ nào cao, chỉ có theo nghiệp mà phát hiện: Consider, for example, the sense-organ of seeing. Its seeing pervades the dharma realm. The same is true of the lustre of the wonderful virtue of hearing, smelling, tasting, contact, and knowing. Since they fill emptiness in the ten directions throughout the dharma realm, how could there be any fixed location in which they are found? It is experienced to whatever extent is dictated by the law of karma.

Đều là thức tâm phân biệt, đo lường, tính tóan, chỉ có lời nói, còn thì tất cả đều là vô thực nghĩa: People in the world, ignorant of this fact, are so deluded as to assign its origin to causes and conditions or to spontaneity. These mistakes, which arise from the discriminations and reasoning processes of the conscious mind, are nothing but the play of empty words which have no real meaning.

7) Thức Đại: Perception or the perception of the six organs.

a) Ông A Nan! The nature of consciousness has no source, but is a false manifestation based on the six organs and objects. Now, take a look at the entire holy assembly gathered here. As you glance at each one in turn, everything you see is like what is seen in a mirror, where nothing has any special distinction. However, your consciousness will identify them one by one, for example, Manjusri, Purna, Maudgalyayana, Subhuti, and Sariputra. Does the discerning faculty of the conscious mind come from seeing, from forms, or from emptiness, or does it arise suddenly without a cause?

· A Nan! Vậy do đâu phát cái thức?: Ananda! Suppose your consciousness came from seeing. If there were no brightness, darkness, form, and emptiness. If these four did not exist, you could not see. With seeing non-existent, what would be the origin of your consciousness?

· Nếu do các tướng, chứ không do cái thấy. Các tướng không có, thức do đâu mà phát ra?: If your consciousness arose from form rather than from seeing, it would not see either in brightness or in darkness. In the absence of brightness and darkness, it would not see form or emptiness, either. In the absence of form, where would your consciousness come from?

Không tướng thì duyên bị tiêu diệt, cái thấy, nghe, hay, biết không biết dựa chỗ nào: If it came from emptiness, it is neither an appearance nor the seeing. Since it does not see, it is unable by itself to discern brightness, darkness, form, or emptiness. Since it is not an appearance, it is in itself devoid of external conditions. Therefore, there is no place for seeing, hearing, awareness, and knowing to be established.

Vậy cái thức phân biệt cái gì?: Since its location is devoid of these two, the consciousness that arises from emptiness would be the same as non-existent. Even if it did exist, it would not be the same as a thing. Even if your consciousness came forth from it, how would it discern anything?

c) Còn nếu cái thức không nhân gì, bỗng nhiên phát ra, vì sao ban ngày không thấy trăng sáng: If it suddenly comes forth without a cause, why can’t you discern the moonlight within the sunlight.

Không lẽ cái thức duyên không do đâu mà tự ra?: You should investigate this even more carefully, discriminate it in detail, and look into it. The seeing belongs to your eyes; the appearances are considered to be the environment; what has an appearance is existent; what is without any appearance is non-existent. What, then, are the conditions that cause the consciousness to come into being? The consciousness moves and the seeing is quiet; they do not mix and unite. Smelling, hearing, awareness, and knowing are the same way. Nor should it be that the condition of consciousness exists spontaneously without an origin.

Gồm với hư không và địa, thủy, hỏa, phong kia đều gọi là bảy đại, tính chân viên dung, đều là Như Lai tạng, vốn không sinh diệt: If this conscious mind does not come from anywhere, you should know that the same is true of the mind, which makes distinctions, and the seeing, hearing, awareness, and knowing, which are all complete and tranquil. Their nature is without an origin. They and emptiness, earth, water, fire, wind are together called the seven elements. Their true natures are perfectly fused, and all are the treasury of the Thus Come One, fundamentally devoid of production and extinction.

· Ông A Nan! Your mind is coarsed and shallow, and so you do not realize that the seeing and hearing are the treasury of the Thus Come One, and you do not discover that knowing is the same way. You should contemplate these six locations of consciousness: are they the same or different? Are they empty or existent? Are they neither the same nor different? Are they neither empty nor existent?

Đều là thức tâm phân biệt, đo lường, tính toán, chỉ có lời nói, chứ không thật nghĩa: You basically do not know that in the treasury of the Thus Come One the nature of consciousness is bright and knowing. Enlightened brightness is the true consciousness. The wonderful enlightenment is tranquil and pervades the dharma realm. It encompasses the emptiness of the ten directions and issues forth in it. How can it have a location? It is experienced to whatever extent is dictated by the law of karma. People in the world, ignorant of this fact, are so deluded as to assign its origin to causes and conditions or to spontaneity. These mistakes, which arise from the discriminations and reasoning processes of the conscious mind, are nothing but the play of empty words which have no real meaning.

Thất Điên Bát Đảo: Completely upset.

Thất Điều Cà Sa (Y): Y bảy mảnh—The Uttara-sanga (skt)—The outer mantle of a monk, composed of seven pieces.

Thất Điều Y: See Thất điều cà sa.

Thất Định Cụ: Theo Kinh Phúng Tụng trong Trường Bộ Kinh, có bảy định cụ—According to the Sangiti Sutta in the Long Discourses of the Buddha, there are seven requisites of concentration:

1) Chánh Tri Kiến: Right views.

2) Chánh Tư Duy: Right Thought.

3) Chánh Ngữ: Right speech.

5) Chánh Mạng: Right livelihood.

6) Chánh Tinh Tấn: Right effort (energy).

7) Chánh Niệm: Right mindfulness.

Thất Đức: Inhuman—Lack of virtues—Contrary to virtue.

Thất Giác Chi (Thất Bồ Đề Phần): Sapta-bodhyangani (skt)—Sambojjhanga (p)—Theo Kinh Phúng Tụng trong Trường Bộ Kinh, có bảy giác chi hay thất bồ đề phần. Phật tử tu hành thất giác chi đạt được những kết quả sau đây: Tất cả ác pháp đều được tiêu trừ; tất cả pháp lành càng ngày càng tăng trưởng; vì tu thiện bỏ ác nên luôn luôn được an lạc, không bị đau khổ; sẽ chứng quả thành Phật—According to the Sangiti Sutta in the Long Discourses of the Buddha, there are seven Limbs (factors) of Enlightenment, or the seven Bodhi shares. Practicing the seven awakening states will result in the following achievements: Elimination of evil; development of virtue; feeling of cheerfulness versus suffering; final enlightenment.

1) Trạch Pháp Giác Chi: Dharma-pravicaya-sambodhyanga (skt)—Dhammavicaya (p)—Selection of the proper dharma—Trạch pháp hay nhiệt thành khảo sát giáo pháp hay hiện tượng. Nhờ nhiệt thành phân tách và khảo sát như vậy mà ta có thể nhận thức rằng—Discrimination of true or false, or keen investigation of phenomena (dharma). It is the sharp analytical knowledge of understanding the true nature of all constituent things, animate or inanimate, human or divine. It is seeing things in their proper perspective. It is the analysis of all component things into their fundamental elements, right down to their ultimates. Through keen analysis and investigation, one understands that:

a) Tất cả các pháp hữu vi đều trải qua những giai đoạn sanh, trụ, dị, diệt một cách nhanh chóng, đến độ khó có thể thấy được: All compounded things pass through the inconceivably rapid moments of arising, reaching a peak and ceasing, just as a river in flood sweeps to climax and fades away.

b) Toàn thể vũ trụ đều liên tục biến đổi, không hề tồn tại giống hệt trong hai khoảnh khắc kế tiếp nhau: The whole universe is constantly changing, not remaining the same for two consecutive moments.

c) Mọi sự vật đều phải chịu sự chi phối của duyên, nhân, và quả: All things in fact are subject to conditions, causes and effects.

d) Những gì vô thường, bất ổn định đều đưa đến quả khổ: What is impermanent and not lasting producing painful or sorrow fruit.

e) Không có cái gọi là “thực ngã,” hay một linh hồn trường tồn bất biến: There doesn’t exist a so-called permanent and everlasting soul or self.

f) Thực tướng của ba đặc tính vô thường, khổ và vô ngã: The true nature of the three characteristics, or laws of transiency, sorrow, and non-self.

It is a mental property and the sixth limb of the Noble Eightfold Path, there called right effort. The Buddha has not proclaimed himself a saviour willing and able to take upon himself the evil of all sentient beings. He is only a Path-Revealer. Each one of us must put forth the necessary effort and work out his own deliverance with heedfulness. He cannot walk for anyone on this path. Thus he advised that each Buddhist should be sincerely zealous, strong and firm in the purpose of reaching the final aim. He also advised: “Be islands unto yourselves, be your own refuge.” Thus did the Master exhort his followers to acquire self-reliance. A follower of the Buddha should not under any circumstances relinquish hope and effort; for the Buddha was one who never gave up courage and effort even as a bodhisattva.

b) Nhiệm vụ của tinh tấn có bốn thứ: The function of energy is fourfold—See Tứ Chánh Cần.

c) Đức Phật đã dạy trong Kinh Pháp Cú, câu 280: “Người sống tiêu cực, uể oải, dã dượi, không tinh tấn chuyên cần, dầu còn trẻ tuổi và khỏe mạnh vẫn lười biếng, suy nhược và thiếu quyết tâm, con người lười biếng ấy không bao giờ tìm ra được con đường dẫn đến trí tuệgiác ngộ, giải thoát.”—In The Dhammapada Sutta, sentence 280, the Buddha taught: “The idler who does not strive, who, though, young and strong, is full of sloth, who is weak in resolution and thought, that lazy and idle man will never find the way to wisdom, the way to elightenment and deliverance.”

3) Hỷ Giác Chi (hỷ lạc): Priti-sambodhyanga (skt)—Piti (p)—Cherfulness or high spirits.

a) Hỷ giác chi là một tâm sở, và là một đức tánh có ảnh hưởng sâu rộng đến thân và tâm. Người thiếu đức “hỷ lạc” không thể tiến bước trên đường giác ngộ, vì trong người ấy lúc nào cũng mang máng một trạng thái lãnh đạm lạnh lùng trước thiện pháp, một thái độ bất mãn với thiền tập, một sự biểu lộ bất toại nguyện—Joy, happiness, rapture, or delight is a mental property, and is a quality which deeply influences both the body and mind. A man lacking in this quality cannot advance along the path to enlightenment. In him there will always arise sullen indifference to the Dharma, an aversion to the practice of meditation, and morbid manifestations.

b) Muốn tu tập đức “hỷ lạc,” hay tâm phỉ, hành giả cần luôn nhớ rằng hạnh phúc không tìm được từ vật chất bên ngoài, mặc dù chuyện lớn chuyện nhỏ bên ngoài luôn có ảnh hưởng đến tâm mình. Hạnh phúc chỉ có được nơi những người biết tri túc: To practice “piti” or joy, Buddhist cultivators should always remember that happiness is a matter of the mind and it should never be sought in external and material things, though they may be instrumental in any way. Only those who possess the quality of contentment can expereince real happiness—See Tri Túc.

c) Hành giả tu theo Phật nên luôn nhớ rằng có sự khác biệt lớn lao giữa thỏa thích và hạnh phúc—Buddhist cultivators should always remember that there is a vast difference between pleasure and happiness.

Tuy nhiên, chúng chỉ là những hiện tượng phù du tạm bợ, vừa phát sanh đã hoại diệt—Pleasure, or pleasant feeling, is something very momentary and fleeting. Pleasant feeling may be an indicative sign of suffering, for what we hug in great glee this moment, may turn to be a source of suffering the next moment. Seeing a form, hearing a sound, perceiving an odour, tasting a flavour, feeling some tangible thing, cognizing an idea, we are usually moved, and from those sense objects and mental objects, we experience a certain degree of pleasure. However, they are all temporary; they are only a passing show of phenomena—See Hai Loại Thỏa Thích.

Đức Phật đã từ bỏ cung vàng điện ngọc, vợ đẹp con ngoan, uy quyền tột đỉnh, để cuối cùng Ngài đạt được giác ngộgiải thoát, chúng ta há có con đường nào khác?—Real happiness or rapture does not come through grasping or clinging to things, animate or inanimate, but from giving up. The Buddha left behind his glorious palace, beautiful wife, good son, as well as kingdom authority, and became a homeless monk. Eventually he attained enlightenment and deliverance, do we have any other choices if we wish to attain enlightenment and deliverance?

4) Khinh An Giác Chi: Prasrabdhi-sambodhyanga (skt)—Passaddhi (p)—Peaceful mind—An hay vắng lặng an tĩnh—Ease, tranquility, riddance of all grossness or weight of body or mind so that they may be light, free and at ease.

a) Có hai loại khinh an—There are two kinds of tranquility:

· Thân an: Kaya-passaddhi (p)—Toàn thể các tâm sở, chớ không riêng phần thân thể vật chất. Nói cách khác, đây là trạng thái an tĩnh vắng lặng của sắc uẩn, thọ uẩn, tưởng uẩn, và hành uẩn—The calm of all mental properties rather than the only physical body. In other words, calm of the aggregates of form, feeling, perception, and the volitional activities or conformations.

· Tâm an: Citta-passaddhi (p)—Trạng thái an tĩnh vắng lặng của thức uẩn—The calm of the mind, or the calm of the aggregate of consciousness.

A man who cultivates calm of the mind does not get upset, confused or excited when confronted with the eight vicissitudes (8 winds or influences) of the world. He is able to understand the rise and fall (come into being and pass away), as well as the momentary fragility of all things.

Nó luôn phóng nhảy bất định.”—It is hard to tranqilize the mind. It trembles and it is unsteady, difficult to guard and hold back. In the Dhammapada, from sentece 33 to 36, the Buddha taught: “The mind quivers like a fish just taken from its watery home and thrown on the dry ground. It wanders at will.”

Only a person of culture is able to present the calm attitude at all times.

e) Bình tĩnh trầm lặng trước thuận cảnh không phải là điều khó, điều khó ở đây là người Phật tử phải luôn giữ tâm an tĩnh vắng lặng trước mọi nghịch cảnh. Làm được như vậy mới mong thành đạt được giác ngộgiải thoát: It is not so difficult to be calm under favourable circumstances, but it is indeed difficult for a Buddhist to remain calm in the midst of unfavourable circumstances. Only the calm mind can help the aspirant to achieve enlightenment and deliverance.

5) Niệm Giác Chi: Smrti-sambodhyanga (skt)—sati (p)—Remembrance of the Dharma.

a) Niệm Giác chi hay trạng thái chánh niệm tỉnh thức qua quán chiếu. Niệm có bốn—Mindfulness, relinquishment, or power of remembering the various states passed through in contemplation. It is the instrument most efficacious in self-mastery. It is fourfold—See Tứ Niệm Xứ

Nói cách khác, nếu không tinh chuyên hành trì giới luật thì không bao giờ có thể nói đến tỉnh thức được: A person cannot be heedful unless he is fully controlling all his actions, whether they are mental, verbal or physical at every moment of his walking life. In other words, he must zealously observe all commandments required of him.

c) Trong Kinh Trường A Hàm, lời di huấn tối hậu của Đức Phật trước khi Ngài nhập Niết Bàn là: “Tất cả các pháp hữu vi đều vô thường. Hãy kiên trì chánh niệm để thành đạt giải thoát: In the Digha Nikaya Sutra, the Buddha’s final admonition to his disciples before entering the Nirvana: “Transient are all component things. Work out your deliverence with mindfulness.”

d) Ngài Xá Lợi Phất trước khi nhập diệt cũng đã khuyên nhủ tứ chúng: “Hãy kiên trì chánh niệm để thành đạt giải thoát.”—Venerable Saripura also advised everybody with his last words: “Strive on with mindfulness to obtain your deliverance.”

Với người hằng có chánh niệm, những tư tưởng thiện, nếu chưa sanh sẽ phát sanh, và những tư tưởng bất thiện, nếu đã phát sanh sẽ tan biến.”—In the Anguttara Nikaya Sutra, the Buddha taught: “Monks, I know not of any other single thing of such power to cause the arising of good thoughts if not yet arisen, or to cause the waning of evil thoughts if already arisen, as heedfulness. In him who is heedful, good thoughts not yet arisen, do arise, and evil thoughts, if arisen, do wane.”

6) Định Giác Chi: Samadhi-sambodhyanga (skt)—Concentration ability—Khả năng giữ tâm tập trung không tán loạn—Stability, concentration, or power to keep the mind in a given realm undiverted.

a) Tâm an trụ và tập trung vào đề mục hành thiền. Tâm an trụ thấy sự vật đúng theo chân tướng của nó: It is only the tranquilized mind that can easily concentrate on a subject of meditation. The calm concentrated mind sees things as they really are.

The unified mind brings the five hindrances under subjugation. Many are the impediments that confront a meditator, an aspirant for enlightenment, especially the five hindrances that hinder concentrative thoughts, and obstruct the way to deliverance—See Ngũ Triền Cái.

c) Định là trạng thái tâm ổn định vững chắc, có thể ví như ngọn đèn vững ngọn , không dao động, ở một nơi không có gió: Concentration is the intensified steadiness of the mind comparable to an unflickering flame of a lamp in a windless place.

d) Định có khả năng giữ các tâm sở trong trạng thái quân bình: Concentration has the ability to maintain the mind and the mental properties in a state of balance.

e) Định giữ cho tâm ngay thẳng, không lay chuyển; tiêu trừ khát vọng chẳng những giúp tâm không vọng động, mà còn giúp mang lại sự thanh tịnh nơi tâm: It is concentration that fixes the mind aright and causes it to be unmoved; dispels passions and not only helps the mind undisturbed, but also helps bring purity and placidity of mind.

f) Người quyết tâm trau dồi “định” phải nghiêm trì giới luật, vì chính giới đức đạo hạnh nuôi dưỡng đời sống tâm linh và làm cho tâm an trụ vắng lặng: One who is intent to practice “concentration” should always zealously observe Buddhist commandments, for it is virtue that nourishes mental life, and make it coherent and calm.

7) Xả Giác Chi: Upeksa-sambodhyanga (skt)—Non-attachment ability—Hoàn toàn xả bỏ, nghĩa là tâm không còn bị quấy nhiễu bởi nội chướng hay ngoại trần—Detachment—Equanimity—Complete abandonment—Indifferent to all disturbances of the sub-conscious or ecstatic mind.

Đây là kết quả của tâm định an tĩnh vắng lặng: According to The Abhidharma, “equanimity” means neutrality. It is mental equipoise and not hedonic indifference. Equanimity is the result of a calm concentrative mind.

Giữa những phong ba bão táp của cuộc đời như lợi lộc, lỗ lã, danh thơm, tiếng xấu, tán tụng, chê trách, hạnh phúc và khổ đau, người có tâm xả không bao giờ bị lay động: In our nowadays violent society, amidst the welter of experience, gain and loss, good repute and ill-repute, praise and blame, happiness and suffering, a man with the mind of equanimity will never waver.

Dầu hạnh phúc hay đau khổ bậc thiện trí không bồng bột cũng không để tinh thần suy sụp.”—In Dharmapada, sentence 83, the Buddha taught: “Truly the good give up longing for everything. The good sages not with thoughts of craving. Touched by happiness or by pain, the wise show neither elation nor depression.”

d) Người đã tu tập và trau dồi được tâm xả, luôn bình thản và tránh được bốn con đường sai lạc—A man who has reached perfect neutrality through the cultivation of equanimity, always avoids the following four wrong paths:

· Tham ái: Chanda (p)—The path of greed.

· Sân hận: Dosa (p)—The path of hate.

· Yếu hèn: Bhaya (p)—Cowardice.

· Si mê: Moha (p)—Delusion.

e) Người tu tập và trau dồi được tâm xả luôn nhìn chúng sanh mọi loài một cách bình đẳng, không thiên vị: A man who has reached perfect neutrality through cultivation of equanimity, always has his serene neutrality which enables him to see all beings impartially.
