Siddhartha (skt)—Siddhattha (p): Sĩ Đạt Đa Thái Tử—See Siddhartha in Sanskrit/Pali-Vietnamese Section.

Siddhartha’s compassion: Lòng từ bi của Thái Tử Sĩ Đạt Đa—Prince Siddhartha’s compassion revealed when he was very young. One day, the Prince was wandering in his father’s royal garden alone when he saw a bird eating insects. He felt sorry for the insects and wondered himself why creatures had to kill each other with the strong preying on the weak, and why they could not live in peace? The Prince had a cousin named Devadatta, who was the son of King Dronodana and about the same age as the Prince. That day, he was also wandering in the royal garden. When he saw a wild goose flying, he stretched his bow and shot it down with an arrow. On hearing the goose’s crying sound, the Prince rushed to the place to pick up the injured wild goose, bandaged its wound and said: “Humans lack of compassion and kill small creatures at random. I will cure your wound and then send you back to mother nature.” At that time, Devadatta also rushed to the place to pick up the injured goose that he just shot down. The Prince advised him not to kill small creatures at will. Devadatta not only ignored the Prince’s advice, but he also ridiculed Prince Siddhartha a “coward.” Since their dispute could not be resolved, the matter was brought before King Suddhodana. The King simply told Devadatta: “Devadatta, just drop the issue! Since you have such excellent skills in archery, you need not worry about not shooting down more wild gooses.” The King’s resolution made the Prince displeased. He could not understand why his father was not critical of Devadatta for being so cruel and fond of killing but, in the contrary, the King seemed to encourage Devadatta to shoot more wild goose? After a few days, the wound of the little goose had healed, and it could fly again. The Prince set it free in the garden, but the little goose squawked to the Prince twice and was reluctant to leave.

Silence of the Buddha: Sự im lặng của Phật---Buddha Sakyamuni refrained from giving a definitive answer to many metaphysical questions of his time. This is often referred to as the silence of the Buddha. He always remained silent when the students asked him if the self exists or not, if an enlightened one continues to exist after his death, if the world is eternal and unending or not. The Buddha explained that he was silent on these questions because answers to them would in no way further progress on the path; these answers would not contribute to overcoming of the passions nor to the attainment of wisdom—Đức Phật từ chối mọi sự trả lời về nhiều vấn đề siêu hình.

What are the six? Here O Bhiksus, the monk performs his bodily activities imbued with love towards his religious companions, in public as well as in private. This Dharma should be remembered, building up mutual love, mutual respect, leading to harmony, to no quarrel, to mutual understanding, to common aspiration. Again O Bhiksus, the monk performs his vocal…his mental activities imbued with love towards his religious companions, in public as well as in private. This Dharma should be remembered, building up mutual love, mutual respect, leading to harmony, to no quarrel, to mutual understanding, to common aspiration. Again O Bhiksus, anything that is accepted according to Dharma, lawfully, even offerings deposited in the begging bowl, the monk should not be the one who does not share them with his virtuous religious companions. This Dharma should be remembered… (as above)… to common aspiration. Again O Bhiksus, as to monastic rules, which are unbroken, unspoilt, unsullied, which have no impurities, leading to emancipation, praised by the wise, which are not be grasped at, leading to concentration, the monk should live in keeping with these rules along with his religious companions, in public as well as in private. This Dharma should be remembered… (as above)… to common aspiration. Again O Bhiksus, as to the views which belong to the Noble Ones, leading up towards helping those who practice them, putting an end to suffering, the monk should uphold these views along with his religious companions, in public as in private. This Dharma should be remembered, building up mutual love, mutual repsect, leading to harmony, to no quarrel, to mutual understanding, to common aspiration. O Bhiksus, these six Dharmas should be remembered, building up mutual love, mutual respect, leading to harmony, to no quarrel, to mutual understanding, to common aspiration—Trong Kinh Trung Bộ, Đức Phật dạy: “Này các Tỷ Kheo, có sáu pháp cần phải ghi nhớ, tạo thành tương ái, tạo thành tương kính, đưa đến hòa đồng, đưa đến không tranh luận, đưa đến hòa hợp.

Six Years of Ascetic praticing of the Buddha (Ascetic period of the Buddha): Sáu năm tu hành khổ hạnh của Đức Phật—After Prince Siddhartha left the royal palace, he wandered in the forest of ascetics. There were many practicing ascetics. The Prince consulted one of the elders: “How can I attain true enlightenment and emanicipation?” The elder replied: “We practice asceticism diligently, hoping that upon our death we could be reborn in the heavens to enjoy happiness. We don’t know anything about enlightenment and emancipation.” The elder added: “The way we take to the asceticism is that when we are hungry, we eat grassroots, bark, flowers, and fruits. Sometimes we pour cold water on our heads all day long. Sometimes we sleep by a fire, allowing the body to be baked and tanned. Sometimes we hang ourselves upside down on tree branches. We practice in different ways, the purpose of which is to worship the sun, moon, stars, the running water and the blazing fire.” After listening to the explanations of this elder, the wise Prince knew that they had practically no knowledge of the problems of life and death and they could not even redeem themselves, not to mention saving other sentient beings. The ascetics were merely inflicting sufferings upon themselves. So the Prince decided to relinquish this kind of ascetic life, left the forest and headed towards other places where the hermits were. He came to Gaya Hill to practice asceticism and meditation. The life which the Prince led was very simple. He just ate a little wheat and barley everyday while devoting all his energy to his practice. So his body became thinner by the day. After six years of ascetic practice, the Prince could not reach his goal. Finally he realized that the major issue of enlightenment and emancipation could never be achieved through ascetic practicing alone.—Sau khi rời bỏ cung vua, Thái tử Sĩ Đạt Đa đi vào rừng khổ hạnh.

Sumeru Mountain: Núi Tu Di—According to the Avatamsaka Sutra, Polar Mountain, or Mount Sumeru, or Sumeru Mountain, the central mountain of every world, wonderful height, wonderful brilliancy. It is a mountain formed from gold, silver, gems and crystal. It is 505,000 miles high. Only heavenly beings live there, human beings cannot see or get there. According to Buddhist theory, Mount Sumeru contained in a Mustard Seed, and a Mustard Seed contained in Mount Sumeru. In the world of relativity, it is impossible for Mount Sumeru to be contained in a mustard seed; only the reverse hypothesis is possible. However, in the world of the absolute, the realm of those who have experienced full enlightenment, both hypotheses can be defended as there is no differentiation with regard to time and space. It is at the top of Indra’s heaven, or heavens, below them are the four devalokas; around are eight circles of mountains and between them are the eight seas, the whole forming nine mountains and eight seas—Theo Kinh Hoa Nghiêm, núi Tu Di là núi trung tâm của tất cả các thế giới, còn gọi là Diệu Cao hay Diệu Quang.

Supportive Recitation: Hộ Niệm (see Trợ Niệm)—Supportive recitation is recitation performed by one or more Pure Land practitioners alongside a dying person, to assist him in achieving rebirth in the Pure Land. Such Supportive Recitation should follow the guidelines of the chief monk. Where there is no monk or nun, family members of the dying person should follow the following procedures—Hộ niệm được những người theo trường phái Tịnh Độ thực hành bên cạnh người sắp chết nhằm giúp người ấy được vãng sanh Tịnh Độ.

1) Respectfully place a statue or image of the standing Amitabha Buddha in front of the dying person, so that he or she can see the image of the Buddha: Thỉnh tượng hay hình Phật Di Đà đứng để ngay trước chỗ người đang lâm chung để cho người ấy thấy Phật.

2) Place a vase of fresh flowers and a burn light incense with soft fragrance. This will help the dying person to develop right thoughts. Not to burn so much incense to prevent choking: Đặc một bình hoa tươi và một bình ắm hương mùi thoảng nhằm giúp người lâm chung khởi lên chánh niệm.

3) If there is a monk or a nun who guide the practice of supportive recitation, that’s good. If not, anybody (the best is about four to five person at a time) can take turns to practice the supportive recitation. Try to prevent any crowded gathering around the dying person because the person always needs fresh air to breathe—Nếu có vị Tăng hay Ni hướng dẫn thì tốt.

4) Participants in the supportive recitation should take turns to recite continuously (uninterrupted); each session should last about an hour. Other than reciting the name of Amitabha Buddha, no ther sounds or voice should be raised: Người tham dự nên thay phiên tụng niệm không cho gián đoạn; mỗi phiên có thể kéo dài một tiếng đồng hồ.

5) The best recitation recommended by the famous master Yin Kuang is only the words of “Amitabha Buddha” because at that time the dying person is very weak in both body and mind: Sự trì niệm tốt nhất mà Ngài Ấn Quang Đại sư đã đề nghị là chỉ cần niệm lục tự Di Đà (Nam Mô A Di Đà Phật) là đủ vì trong lúc nầy người sắp lâm chung rất yếu về cả thể xác lẫn tinh thần.

6) Before starting supportive recitation, if the dying person is still able to talk and respond to questions even with a very weak or soft voice, family members can ask the person about what kind of recitation the person likes to recite. To do this we help the dying person silently recite along with the supportive recitation party. If we recite what the person does not like or not his or her habits, we may cause uneasiness and destroy the person’s right thought: Trước khi bắt đầu tụng niệm, nếu người sắp lâm chung vẫn còn có thể nói và trả lời dù rất yếu, gia đình nên hỏi xem người ấy muốn hay thích niệm gì.

7) When reciting we should not recite too fast or too loud because by doing this we create uneasiness for the dying person to catch up reciting with us: Khi niệm chúng ta không nên tụng quá nhanh hay quá lớn vì làm như vậy chúng ta gây khó chịu cho người sắp lâm chung muốn bắt kịp trì niệm với chúng ta.

8) When reciting, try not to recite too slow or too soft because by doing this we prevent the dying person’s weakened mind to register the words: Khi tụng, nên cố đừng tụng quá chậm hay âm thanh quá thấp vì làm như vậy chúng ta cản ngăn sự thu nhận âm thanh nơi cái tâm quá yếu của người sắp quá vãng.

9) If the person is too weak and is not able to hear external recitation, we can recite into the person’s ear. This will help keep the person’s mind clear and steady with only the words of Amitabha Buddha or whatever name of the Buddha the person likes: Nếu người ấy quá yếu, không thể nghe được lời tụng niệm, chúng ta có thể niệm sát vào lổ tai người ấy để tâm người ấy luôn vững vàng trong sáng khi chỉ nghe hồng danh Phật A Di Đà hay hồng danh của vị Phật nào mà người ấy muốn.

10) In conclusion, we should try to recite so that the name of the Buddha can pass through the person’s ears and penetrate deep into his or her Alaya consciousness, so that when his or her dying time comes, his Alaya consciousness only bears the words of Amitabha Buddha, he or she will surely go to the Pure Land: Nói tóm lại, chúng ta phải trì niệm thế nào cho lời niệm được vào tai và thấm sâu vào tâm thức người ấy, để khi lâm chung người ấy chỉ có một niệm Di Đà, ấy là Tây Phương Tịnh Độ
